Lately it seems my listening habits revolve around YouTube, which is basically a treasure chest for mix makers. Problem is, recording YouTube DJ sets isn't all that easy. Daniel Bachman first came to my attention when Mirror Universe released his tape Feast of the Green Corn earlier this year. Noticeably out of line with the proto-chillwave the South Carolina label had released prior, Sacred Harp culled Apalachian ragas reminiscent of Robbie Basho, John Fahey, and most recently, Jack Rose (R.I.P.), and while the comparisons are apt, they are not defining. Sacred Harp is not simply channeling these axeman, but rather joining the tradition from a different standpoint, one with as much clear focus on dirging drones, as high-mountain balladry. Sacred Harp's debut full-length Apparitions at the Kenmore Plantation, if anything, proves that Bachman can sit side-by-side on Grandfather Mountain playing with his elders, and that each will most likely look at him, slyly, and nod, in recognition, which is pretty much the best compliment you could get from an elder statesman. One of the most striking debuts of the year, and one that sits mighty well next to Julian Lynch's Mare, and Rose's swan song, Luck In the Valley.

Sacred Harp's Apparitions at the Kenmore Plantation is currently available as a free digital dowload, as well as a limited, self-released edition of 300 from the artist himself. Highest recommendation!

A two-hour mix as heavily influenced by the title of the Flaming Lips record Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, as it is by the daydreams and mental images the title conjures up.

Visual WTF wunderkind Megazord has compiled a few massive collections of screwed top 40 pop, R&B, and hip-hop from the last decade. His latest, Throw Myself into the Mediafire, is "a memorial mix to the fake meme of Mediafire dying." Just like his visual work, Zord's re-edits are "sometimes [a bit] overboard" and that's why they hit so hard. Preposterous to the bone, it's clear Zord (and most everyone slowing tracks these days) ain't doing shit, and that's just why these tunes reign supreme; no pretense, no "talent", no expensive gear, just a desire to make eyes roll and heads bang.

Toujours hypno-headphonics landed in my inbox this weekend. Minimal in nature, Toujours seems to be crafting dance music much in line with Burial and The Sight Below, in that it's more suited for self-medicated bedroom hypnosis than strobe-lite clubs. That said, his tunes reek of some stanky remix cologne, and are prime pallets that noted remixers like Gold Panda and Teengirl Fantasy would seemingly drool over. No surprise either that Toujours follows Ghostly's SoundCloud page, as he certainly dabbles in Detroit minimalism on"Impact '66" (collab w*th redwave) and "Topper", though his style seems much more rooted in Pacific Coast hypnogogia ("Time for Somebody"). That said, Toujours isn't afraid of mixing it up, as the "melttttt mix" of "Time for Somebody," a nearly 20-minute long ambient remix, fittingly proves.

radio: Sunday Brunch Ep???

Save the Creek

No idea what episode number this is, but that doesn't matter much. Rick Ross tweeted that there were purple clouds over NYC today as I was headed to Newtown Radio. Seemed appropriate for the heavy mix of deep psych and lush explorations I had planned for Sunday Brunch. The storm hit sometime in the middle of our broadcast, which probably shifted the direction of the show. (Subconsciously, of course, as Newtown's nuclear bunker has no direct access to the outside world.)

Newtown Radio is also in the midst of preparing a very special live concert series and they need your help. The station, which has played host to wonderful radio programs from Arthur Radio to the Visitation Rites & Underwater Peoples shows, as well as the post-punk hour from Negative Pleasure and a host of other prime shows making Newtown one of the premier little radio outlets in New York. They will be hosting a new live concert series at Los Hermanos Tortilleria, which you may remember was an excellent location for the Pure Ecstasy/Twin Sister show earlier this year. Better yet, a portion of the proceeds will also help fund the Newtown Creek Alliance, whose job it is to make sure Greenpoint's waterways are cleaner for future generations. The shows will also benefit Newtown Radio, nurturing the up-and-coming station into young adulthood. Check it all out at Kickstarter, and be sure to contribute whatever you can. It's a good cause.

"Burn"

A cold, rainy day is the best time to be inside the Newtown Radio studio at Danbro. You don't feel bad about missing out on the afternoon sun, and it doesn't rain inside. You control the atmosphere. When Ari and I walked in, Camilla and Jessa of Future Shuttle and Corky of the Tesla Effect had already set the tone; sage and incense a burning, mystic vibes smoking out the unwindowed fallout shelter. Shit got hot. It helped that Ari brought a handful of dub records and I was really in the mood to crank the low ends all afternoon. And so it went.

Jonathan from Blackburn Recordings has been telling me about this killer comp he's been set to release since we randomly bumped into each other at the Shake Some Action Ethiopean jam during SXSW. I was pretty stoked about it at the time, but that may have been because the dude manning the keg in the parking lot went inside and I kept pumping the keg myself. Either way, was a real pleasant surprise to get my computer back today and simultaneously get an email from Jonathan with the comp. Various Deficiencie Vol.1 hits like a massive headwind bulldozzing down Norman Ave, a heady combination of rough and tumble garbage blowing amongst the translucent blue radiation spewing from the Newtown Creek. It's tough to pin down, but there are some serious heavy hitters involved, including Big Troubles, Cloud Nothings, City Center, Sleep Over, Coasting, Sore Eros and many more.
