Left coast time travelers are about to set foot in the Big Apple. Sun Araw is gearing up for a big trip East and he's bringing the whole gang–- The Sun Araw Band, DJMGG, Dream Magic and more. In addition to playing shows at 285 Kent( with D'eon, Matthewdavid and M Geddes Gengras) and Maxwells, the crew will also be throwing their infamous Where's Your Child? party night at Coco66, with Psychic Reality and Sex Worker playing live, and DJ sets by Sun Araw, DJMGG, Todd Pendu and more. The fine young gentlemen at Rose Quartz have compiled a collection of tunes to benefit the city of Christchurch, which some of the RQ team call home. If you recall, the Kiwi City was devastated by a recent earthquake, which rattled the city's bones and left it a fragment of its former self. The Rose Quartz team reached out to some of their favorite artists (Thurston Moore, Sun Araw, Grouper, Dolphins into the Future, Monopoly Child Star Searchers, amongst others), many of whom have played in the city, at venues that are now not much more than rubble. The compilation is full of heavy hitters who loved the city. That said, everyone involved would greatly appreciate if listeners could support the relief effort by giving a few bucks to the Red Cross.

The Woods

Director Matthew Lessner's The Woods (which was successfully funded on Kickstarter, and will premier at Sundance this year) is the story of a group of young revelers seeking to disconnect from modern society and sojourn in a new sylvan homestead. At the heart of the film are bourgeois values and technology, how they interplay and what happens when young people try to subvert them. Fitting then that Los Angeleno and dark dub warrior Sun Araw contributes this cyborg-morphic cover of Neil Young's "Thrasher." (Originally, Sun Araw was supposed to score the entire film, though in the end the soundtrack features tunes by Dirty Projectors, Lucky Dragons and more.) Dense grooves from the west coast. As the title Yaw-Mah-Ha suggests, Sohni Chambers are churning deep roots, those previously only movable via supreme force. No surprise that the nu-organ/drum duo consists of Sun Araw's Cameron Stallones, and fellow light traveler Nick Malkin. Sohni Chamber's first offering was delivered via Goaty and succeeds in its restrictions; their are no overdubs on Yaw-Mah-Ha, giving it an immensely loose and heavy quality, which, unlike many similar warts and all recordings, never trails off into self-righteous noodling. Rather, Sohni Chambers rides the electrical energy of innate to their namesake(s). If only Triniton's and P-70's pianos were this far out.

"Look Out For My Love"

Late last year a good friend told me about a good friend's fell into a dark alley after misjudging a step on a roof in San Francisco. As the story goes, J.M.W., noted board freak, chief and axe shredder, sustained major injuries (fractured skull, internal bleeding, shattered wrist), but it could have been much worse. While the state of California helped gratefully in J.M.W's recovery, mending on a no-frills budget isn't the easiest thing in the world. That's where his friends came together. One night, while sitting besides their narco'd frien, they knew there must be a way to help. While none could afford to contribute what pocket change laid around, they each had a song. Soon after that, a collection was born. In the spirit of J.M.W., each of those tunes happens to be a Neil Young cover. Produced for the A Fundamental Experiment compilation, a limited edition (300), silk-screened LP, from which all proceeds will benefit J.M.W.. Purchase the LP here and contribute to J.M.W's recovery. "The Phynx"

Ray just sent me this recap of the Sun Araw show at Coco 66 this past Sunday, which was, to say the least, some really HEAVY shit. All night. (Aside: Bigs up to Upstairs CDR, the KGB Man himself, and DJ Bryce (?) who was in the front bar spinning shit all slo'd out and drawly-like.) OPN killed a set too, but thats a whole different story. Sun Araw came in from Cali the night before, after getting stuck in LA because of weather, Airline-delays, etc in NYC. Dude took the red-eye and landed at LGA at 9:30 AM Sunday Morning, days after his supposed arrival. Yet somehow, despite delays, Sun Araw instantly cast a mega-aura over the greater Greenpoint area. The sky got all neon green. Except the ooz sky wasn't poisonious, it was just glowing mist. Like tie-dyed fog. Everything was real fresh. Super zones. (RC on a different plane of existence with this one. Right on.)

I hate throwing the term drone around because it tends to turn a lot of people off, but I've noticed there is something about Pocahaunted which enthralls even people completely opposed to avant-noise, etc. I've been following the cavernous Angelino's for a while now, snagging their Gold Miner's Daughter tape, as well as the phenomenal Chains LP, but Passage is really where its at. Maybe that's because it is the first time on record (I think) that the Pocahaunted sisters have recorded with Sun Araw axe-mastermind Cameron Stallone and LA weirdo scene maker Bobb Bruno, whose appeared on other Pocahaunted recordings, as well as records by Abe Vigoda, Mika Miko, Silver Dagger and countless other "Smell" acts. While Chains is truly a force to be reckon with, the strength of the Passage lies in its subtlety. It creeps up from behind you, shrouding the room (or the park or wherever the hell you are) in an incredibly dense haze of melodic smog. Breathing in too much of this smog will surely choke one to death, however, if prepared (with swine-flu doctor's mask and a good pair of goggles) one can see the light beeming through the smokey fog, making the Passage the perfect modern representation of Plato's Allegory of the Cave.

Ridgewood, NJ based Ducktails has a lot planned for 2009. Not only will he release his debut LP on Not Not Fun, but the tropical loop specialist is also set to release a slew of other recordings, including a split LP with Sun Araw on Not Not Fun, Ducktails "Acres of Shade" on Arbor, a Ducktails CD on Holy Mountain, a Ducktails CD compilation on RTB and a Ducktails/TOMUTONTTU 7". Big things indeed. If you can't wait for the LP, peep this radio session Ducktails did on the venerable NJ indie station WFMU. Also Ducktails is playing a host of upcoming shows in NYC, including one tomorrow night at Monster Island in BillyBurg.
