mp3: Hits Incorporated "Stranger"

I Know That Yr Man...

Saccharine pop of the highest fidelity seems to be the agenda of Hits Incorporated, a silky smooth ensemble birthed from the infamous Cats Purring collective's Dude Ranch in the heart of Mississippi. Soft pads gel with lite FM drum machines while Dent May harmonizes, so, if you were wondering, it's ill.

"Stranger/ Do you want to/ Take my Number/ And call me, call me, call me, call me"

Hits INC remind me of that band The Future Sound of London, in name only. Ya know, like, not to jump to conclusions, but this might be The Future Sound of America. Bold statement, but willing to take that bet.

Also, be sure to jam the screwed version of Dent Sweat's "More than a Friend, Less Than A Lover." Penultimate slo-jam of the moment for moi.

mp3: Dent Sweat "I Don't Mind"

With An Ass Like That

While his latest 7-inch veers away from the Ukulele crooners of his debut LP, Dent May has a new alter ego, Dent Sweat, which finds the Mississippi based artist moving even further away from the instrument which defined Magnificent Ukulele. "I Don't Mind" is a jammer. Now that we got that out of the way, I'd like to note that it is a sexy jammer, more in line with Next's "Too Close" than indie, or the ever-burgeoning slo-R&B movement that's due for its backlash right…about…now. "I Don't Mind" finds Dent exploring seemingly infinite production styles, with nods to booty bass and flourishing synth house, while continuing to mine the ever fruitful, tongue in cheek poetics he's been perfecting for a few years. Like I said before, this is a jammer, and most certainly worthy of the Dent Sweat moniker. You will sweat.

"I Don't Mind" is featured on The Report V.II companion compilation. You can find Dent all over NYC this week, including a stop at the Bobka-curated This is Not a CMJ show Wednesday afternoon at Pianos.

mp3: Dent May "Eastover Wives" (Screwed)

Sweat

Dent posted this up on Twitter last night. Not sure who the screwer is (Dent himself??), but, it's bar'd out. Just go with it. The original, in complete hi-fi, is about to be released via Forest Family on a new single, which should be considered a Double A-Side. Dent's also got some other haute shite popping in the coming months. Stay tuned.

cover: Dent May does Prince

"I'm Over Being Sober"

Dent May, aka Mississippi's most talented ukulele player, takes on "When You Were Mine" from the Purple One's third record Dirty Mind. Handclaps, uke, some squeeze box, a pleasant Casio synth riff and some sweet vocal harmonization make this an irresistible companion to The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele, which, coincidentally, came out today on Paw Tracks. Snag Dent's Prince cover below.

(Also, if you find yourself at the record store, or on Insound, you should probably pick up the Pains of Being Pure at Heart's debut, which also came out today, on Slumberland.)

Bobkast #21: Mowee Wowee

"Meet Me In The Garden"

After a bitter NYE we're more than ready to welcome warm, sunny afternoons back into our lives. While that certainly isn't going to happen anytime soon in Brooklyn, one can always dream. Inflatable kiddie pools, zinc on ye nose, old episodes of Magnum PI and a quick call to your most favorite delivery guy can prove a MacGuyver-like solution. After all, what else do you need to feel like your in Hawaii? OK, a cocktail would be nice. And maybe some spam and Reese's.

new: Dent May

"I Belong Here In This World"

The lore goes a little something like this. Animal Collective went to record MPP in Mississippi and found this ukulele toting, four-eyed crooner playing the sweetest, saddest, most sympathetic songs a young man could sing. His name, Dent May. The visionaries they are, they set Mr. May up with producer Rusty Santos, who recorded May in his double-wide trailer in Taylor, Mississippi. The result is a record full of heartfelt witticisms and all the dumb intellectual and philosophical questions a drunk and stoned college-town boy ponders on weary afternoons on the quad. I only wish I was still a faux-ID toting undergrad listening after a three hour lecture on the Christ-like symbolism in Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard To Find." Oh well, maybe in a next life, when its reissued for the 100th time.

Dent's got a big tour scheduled for 2009, opening for AC Newman nationwide, including a stop at the Bowery Ballroom March 15th. Paw Tracks will release The Good Feeling Music of Dent May and His Magnificent Ukulele on February 3rd. Highly recommended for fans of Jens Lekman, The Magnetic Fields, Jonathan Richman and Beirut.
