show: Sore Eros/Mountainhood Record Release Party
Blackburn
Jonathan at Blackburn & I are throwing a big show this weekend to celebrate the latest releases by Sore Eros's (Know Touching out on SHDWPLY), as well as Mountainhood's The Boat-Makers Daughter, the latest full-length from Blackburn. The show also features the mystical guitar ventures of Sultan (grip her TCC tape here), Luka Usmiani's revelatory No Demons Here and Animal Hospital, whom I caught at Coop 87 during CMJ and sounded pretty good. Come hang this Saturday at Shea Stadium. Rumor has it artist Molly Smith will have some silk screened versions of the above poster. Rad. Watch Sore Eros brand new video for "Giraffe's Kiss."

tape: Various Deficiencies Vol.1
Sultan

A few months ago we posted the exceptional debut compilation from Blackburn Recordings. Originally the mix, which featured the likes of Big Troubles, Coasting, Sultan, Sore Eros, Campfires, Cursillistas, Sleep Over, Cloud Nothings and Lame Drivers, amongst a ton of others, was only available as a MediaFire download. Well, now our homeboy Jonathan at Blackburn has taken the mix to its rightful home; the cassette tape. This limited edition of 130 features the art of Molly Smith, who hand-colored each tape. (Nice job Molly!) Blackburn was nice enough to hook Bobka up with a couple copies for giveaway. Name your favorite spaghetti western in the comments for a chance to win.

mp3: Sultan
"Summer Sigh"

Light pollution is a major problem in New York City, especially for alley dwellers. Much like vampires, alley dwellers fear exposure to the sun, not because they will perish. Alley dwellers reside in the shadows to protect unknowing citizens from the evils of repitilian beasts, the sort of leeches who prey on society, causing a rupture in the pipeline of humanity. The music of Sultan is inline with the mission of the alley dwellers, to preserve and enlighten humanity, while diminishing evil. Of course, in order to accomplish this, one must live in the darkness. In this shady realm, Sultan's guitar acts more like a lightsaber and less like an axe. It cuts through hellish spirits, helping to resurrect the underworld and free unsuspecting beings from the trappings of an alien world they most likely do not know exists.

Sultan has released a couple (I think) self-released tapes, and also has a new collection, Summer Sigh (highly recommended), on her bandcamp, which you can download here. Check out the slumber filled "There Goes My Girl," featured on Blackburn Recordings Various Deficiencies Vol.1 comp below. Expect a 7-inch sometime in the future on Blackburn.

comp: Various Deficiencies Vol.1
"Hey Sue"
Jonathan from Blackburn Recordings has been telling me about this killer comp he's been set to release since we randomly bumped into each other at the Shake Some Action Ethiopean jam during SXSW. I was pretty stoked about it at the time, but that may have been because the dude manning the keg in the parking lot went inside and I kept pumping the keg myself. Either way, was a real pleasant surprise to get my computer back today and simultaneously get an email from Jonathan with the comp. Various Deficiencie Vol.1 hits like a massive headwind bulldozzing down Norman Ave, a heady combination of rough and tumble garbage blowing amongst the translucent blue radiation spewing from the Newtown Creek. It's tough to pin down, but there are some serious heavy hitters involved, including Big Troubles, Cloud Nothings, City Center, Sleep Over, Coasting, Sore Eros and many more. Peep the tracklist and download the comp below, you won't be sorry. In addition, the comp will also be available as a limited edition cassette in the near future, so keep your eyes/ears peeled for that one too.

mp3: Big Troubles "Worn Out"
"Sleep"
If you've been paying attention, Big Troubles (and Twin Sister) have been all over the web this week. Their debut seven-inch on Blackburn Recordings came out a few weeks back and I was lucky enough to snag a copy at the Julian Lynch show at Bruar Falls last month. Boasting 4-tracks, including an alternative version of the shoegaze pop anthem "Freudian Slips" and the oft-blogged "Wouldn't Mind," "Worn Out," a track which has been a live staple for the band, almost gets lost in the mix. Where the recording tends to keep the speed limit, the live version is all "I can't drive 55", with Ian and Alex kicking it into high gear and plowing down anything in their way. I'm sure they'll be doing that tonight, in a fog machine haze.
