radio: Underwater Visitiations Takeovah

"I'm Giving You Acid"

Pump up the volume. Make parent's freak the fuck out. School closings. Bomb threats. Steal the air. Sort of my mantra walking into Newtown Radio last Thursday with a bag of records and a six pack of studweisers. Time to jack the air waves. And thats what happened for approximately three hours, as I meandered through a set of...well...let's just say it was all over the place; Syrian dance pop, hi-flying prog, droner zoners, Acid House, Aaliyah, etc. In the wise words of Christian Slater, a-hum, I mean, Mark Hunter, "All the great themes have been used up and turned into theme parks."

tape: Twin Sister Alternates Side B

"Save Your Money"

Twin Sister's Alternates tape is long gone at this point, however, in celebration of Color Your Life hitting shelves today, I figured it'd be as good a time as any to share the B-side of their contribution to The Curartorial Club. A skeletal rendering of "Lady Daydream" hit the web a while back, and if that tickled your funny bone then you'll probably be into the other demos and outtakes from Color Your Life. Buy the record here, then DL the B-side below.

video: Oneohtrix Point Never "Preyouandi"

"Zones Without People"

Psychic chaos and molecular deviance are the name of the game once again as rob0-editor Megazord data-moshes and slime fucks his way through ANOTHER OPN cut. This time we're greeted with "Preyouandi", the magnum opus/swan song off Lopatin's soon-to-be-released Returnal. Will the spinning orb suck you in? That's sort of a rhetorical question, I say 'sorta' because if you went ahead and answered it, you probably aren't lying to yourself. That orb is sucking you in. Accept its magnetic pull, but do not fall victim to the star eating a planet 10 million light years away. Abstract and deconsctruct hindsight until all you can visualize are circuit bent geometrics rotting in the atmosphere.

video: Stellar OM Source "Island Best"

"Ocean Woman"

The genuine nature of movies and television shows is so captivating that most people sit around enfatuated with the boob tube for an average of 10 hours. When the opening credits roll, a new dimension is entered. A realm full of un/paralleled im/possibility. Armchair psychiatrists often note the escapist factor. The video for Stellar Om Source's "Island Best" is an ode to the grand tradition of the escapist-fantasy trailer. A glimpse of a world most would never dream of occupying, yet no one would pass up the chance to leave their body for a few hours to explore regions unknown to mere mortals.

"Island Best" is from the soon-to-be-released Trilogy Selections on, you guessed it, Olde English Spelling Bee. The record is a "a selection of tracks from her CDr trilogy released last year." A limited edition of 125 is currently available solely in the OESB store and at Stellar OM Source shows. The limited version predates an official release coming shortly.

video: James Ferraro "Demon Channels"

"One Million Frost Tipped Dreams"

James Ferraro just posted a preview of what will be a "full length feature" video to hit the web later this summer. "Demon Channels," described as "a sneak peak at hell's hottest TV show", features both "Motel Christmas," from the recently released Feed Me CD, and "Cheez Whiz in Fast Forward," which looks AND sounds just like a chemi-fromage clogged VHS run through a broken security monitor at high speed. The new track will be released on Wild World out July 4th on OESB.

radio: Sunday Brunch Ep 13

"My Mind Went Blank"

Chopped up, not slopped up. This weeks radio set was largely inspired by the mantra of the late DJ Screw. Heat rays and cool mist are priority here, used as transportation to a place you and I have only dreamed of living in; some hippie outpost where Screw & Pimp C would be chillin alongside Wavy Gravy, if WavyGravy was a desireable person to chill beside. (He is not, but there must be a legit Wavy Gravy out there somewhere. A lost Space Cadet searching for likeminded revellers to get zonked with.)

This week the takeover starts. I'll be spinning jams on Underwater Visitations today from 4-7, while Ari (UP) and Emilie will host Sunday Brunch. Be sure to tune in to Newtown Radio for a heaping of audible candy.

new: Oneohtrix Point Never "Pelham Island Road"

"Ouroboros"

Eternity always feels like a long way away, but is it? That's the feeling OPN's "Pelham Island Road" conjures. A long and twisted visual trip down a road thats more like a jeti, surrounded on both sides by tides crashing on ancient stone. While digital drone is the force, an air of humanity permeates "Pelham Island Road," a head scratcher which begs on to ask, Who exactly is the ghost in the machine? The answer lies within Returnal.

new: WOOM

"Backwards Beach"

Residing in the murky lowlands can make for a peculiar existence. Minimalism is key, and the union of mind, body and spirit aids in expanding the limitations of desolate living. A voice is much more than a voice. And, like many other oft-overlooked elements of daily life, the voice can be used to fulfill greater needs. (Ex. A bird call is not just a bird call, it's a call/cry for food.) This union can transform tin cans, car tires and fish bones Heathcliff dragged in from the swamp into wondrous pieces of exotic gadgetry; twig sticks, skeletal marimbas and natural cavern echo chambers are some of the first things that come to mind. And thus is the magic displayed on Muu's Way, the debut from WOOM, out June 28th on BaDaBing Records.

WOOM are playing Cake Shop tonight (5/18) and Death By Audio tomorrow (5/19).

bobkast: #32 So I Can Fly

"Time Traveling"

May Flowers are spewing out an obscene amount of pollen into the atmosphere. Streets glow a tainted boogie colour, giving concrete a luscious, almost sensual appeal. The green mist penetrates our nasal cavity's and fucks with our neuro-system. Eyes water, heads swell and before you can wipe the goo from your nose, a dizzy-ing rush rolls over you. Next thing you know, your alone in a room. A bed room. In a doll house. Inside a hot air balloon. There's a looney man at the helm, boosting flame power, before letting it ride out and sailing across the solar sea.

This mix was crafted during the englightening hours by myself and Erez Avissar. Erez and I will be DJ'ing this Saturday at Good Company in Williamsburg (Grand & Hope). We'll also be DJ'ing next Wednesday with Julianna Barwick at a venue TBD. Consider this a primer.

mp3: We Like Cats "Money Dub Money"

"THESE CATS CAN DO RAINBOW BASKETBALL SHOTS ACROSS THE SOLAR SYSTEM"
The entire concept of We Like Cats is completely absurd; take three of Portland's wildest musicians (Adam Forker, Honey Owens & Eva Salens) and watch them crank the low ends and rhyme about cats. What followed the session was a mythical germination period, which Marriage Records describes thoroughly:
Original tracks for their debut LP Proper Eats were recorded at Marriage Studio in Portland, Oregon on two sizzingly hot summer days in 2009.The tape were then buried in a small plot of dirt next to the parking lot through the rainy season until the winter of 09/10, at which point they were properly saturated with the deepest filth of soul fire dub juice, cooked in an oven for 7 hours on low heat, strung back up in the studio, versioned, dubbed and mastered for thickest possible vibrations."
That's about as apt a description as you are going to find. The warped and Tubby-inspired party collection is available on LP from Marriage Records, and the vinyl comes with "4 extended bonus dub version mp3s" for all you soundwoofin' heads lurking in the swamp.

cd: Jim/James Ferraro On Air & Feed Me

"Dreams"

It's only been a minute since OESB dropped James Ferraro's The Last American Hero but that doesn't mean the martian hamburgler can't drop another one today. That said, Mr. Ferraro is dropping TWO new CDs today on his Muscle Works Inc. label. The latest batch finds the omnipresent humanoid trying out a new pseudonym, Jim Ferraro, the moniker he used to create On Air. (Feed Me was released by James Ferraro.) Gushing with silicon ease, On Air is the sound of keyboards smoking on battery acid ooz and nascent circuit board tweakery spewing off into the mist like mayonaise fizzing from a 2 liter bottle of Sunkist. Repetition is key, and rewards are great for those huffers gonked enough to seperate the eternal goo from the ecto plasm.

James Ferraro's Feed Me is a tortured nêu-metal study in So-Cal-I-Fuck-You convenient store culture. Caffienated hyginks and five finger discounts populate the aural zones of Feed Me, which is about as moldy Dorito focused and lima bean tarnished as the Cumberland Farms in Elmhurst with the Porky Pig statue out front.

On Air & Feed Me are available exclusively through OESB in the USofA, while INTL folk will be able to order through Volcanic Tongue. Pre-order both and receive special PIXARNI bonus disc, limited to 50 in the entire Universe. Get 'em all here.

album: Liam the Younger Revel Hidden Worlds

"Bob Dylan"

Liam the Younger isn't one to play into public perceptions or preconceived notions. On his latest record, Revel Hidden Worlds, he sheds much of the tape hiss and acousic balladry that populate Clear Skies Over Black River and After the Graveyard and, in the process, finds his voice as redemtive Tiresias. As usual his lyrics are prophetic, words not just for singing, but for living, the sort of songs that become ingrained in your psyche after only a few listens. When "Lie" punches through the drywall caked "All Here For" it's clear this record isn't just a day in the park, but a beast with motives and intentions neither you nor I will ever understand, no matter how hard we try. But in that non-understanding lies the pay off; Revel Hidden Worlds does just that, peeling the coating from the everyday, highlighting the everyday bullshit and beauty that make life worth living. Revel Hidden World was recently released on LP by Brave Men Run as a limited pressing of 300 vinyl, complete with photo/lyric book. I highly suggest you purchase it here. Copies of the album are also available on cassette through Wild Animal Kingdom. In addition, Liam's also made the record available for free download, which you can do below.

mix: Love Triangle

"Count Zero"

Austin synth-quartet SURVIVE just posted this Texas sized mix made for Vice UK by Tommy Boy. The results are near Earth shaking. Gathering bits and pieces from the Austin-Houston-Dallas Triangle, Love Triangle is a roll slow'd/lean back oriented mix that is sure to set the tone for a warped weekend. From George Quartz cover of "Coconut" to Psychic Violence's "U is Moon" to Twisted Wire's "Hell" and How to Quit Crack's "Gone Away", this is essentially the education I received on my first trip to Austin last March. I can guarantee that nearly all of this mix, if not the entire thing, will be new to you. Now put the lime in the coconut and drink it all up.

2. Phantastes - Flight of Stares
3. Darktown Strutters - Silver Bullet

mp3: Do While "Balloon Clouds/Balloon"

"A Candy Coated Slow Down"

The other day I made reference to an escapist balloon retreating into the atmosphere in a post about Wigflip Records new Run DMT/Happy Family split. And now, the score from inside that drfiting balloon; Do While's "Balloon Clouds/Balloon." Transience is the main objective here. Meandering bliss and repetitive loops are the focus, which is totally out of focus and mared by the sun's striking glare. "Balloon Clouds/Balloon" lures you into a realm; you have two choices; to completely avoid it, or to succomb to the atmosphere, a place Do While seems to explore with wide eyes and exploratory intentions. Explorations can be found on his new CD on Wigflip Records.

split: Run DMT/ Happy Family

"Gang Green"

There is little one can do to stop a helium balloon from running away. The easiest way would be to simply pop the balloon, then it could never leave. Of course, then you'd have to watch it wither away in front of you, until its a wrinkly mess of plastic and gas. But, if you just set the balloon free, it could lend a smile to anyone in the burgeoning Babylon who happened to watch the balloon soar above the city. In a way, the new split between salty Balty's Happy Family and Run DMT (now residing in Brooklyn) is that balloon, a gas'd vessel capable of charming the pants off the nastiest of cobra's. If "Youtube" and "Spruce Bringsteen" are any indication, smiles abound in our fair city today. Watch the sky.

Both "Youtube" and "Spruce Bringsteen" will be available on the upcoming Run DMT/Happy Family split tape & cd on Wigflip Records.

video: Dirty Beaches "True Blue"

"Walking"

Enamored with Dirty Beaches sound after reading Tom's praise a few months ago, I copped Alex Zhang Hungtai's self-titled Night People tape at Co-Op 87 last I was there. While the ambiance is up my alley, it hasn't hit me the way "True Blue" did. A relic from days when aching Orbison melodies accounted for a collosal amount of joy and sorry, "True Blue" rings familiar, while skirting the obvious in place of something a little more genuine. The tune is removed from its kin, sort of the ugly duckling, and while it straddles roads Roy probably manuevered many nights in his little Red corvette, "True Blue" is ostensibly original. It help's that in the video, Alex simply performs solo over a backing track, crooning on a security camera while double exposed visions of highways yet to travel color the negative space. One could easily loose sense of self while viewing.

The tune will be made available on 7" courtesy of Zoo Music in the coming month. For now, pick up Dirty Beaches s/t tape on Night People.

radio: Sunday Brunch Ep11

"103?!?!?!"

The above image was found by Googling 'hot city.' On the way to Danbro on Sunday it was 97. By the time we left, 103?!?! Delirious & stanky we sought refuge in the Newtown Radio studio, which, in all honesty, sorta sucked considering how sunny it was. Either way, we did our best to hold down some cool vibes for those sweltering in batcave apartments. No live performances this week, but Ari & I did play tracks from the new Woods LP, the (hot-off-the-press) Mountain Man 10" and an assortment of other random goodies, including Shits & Giggles, an Ariel Pink sideproject released Trick or Treat through (co-conspirators) the Vas Deferens' Free Dope And Fucking In the Streets imprint.
