Admittedly, I'm not a big Dan Deacon fan. Spiderman of the Rings had some choice schizo-freak-out jams but didn't seem to garner repeat listens. I saw Mr. Deacon once a few years back at the Judson Church on Mischief Night, part of a NY Mag scavenger hunt-slash-costume party-open bar, which, for better or worse, also included Chromeo (meh). That night was fun, but I sort-of figured I'd had my "Dan Deacon Experience." That said, Wham City's Mayor had his way with the late-night crowd at Primavera Sound. Not only did he clear the floor, start a "dance off" and provide constant dance-move instruction, but he also managed to conduct a fifteen person ensemble. The ensemble is tight, and I mean tight like a husky dude wearing girls jeans tight, and provided a much needed depth to Deacon's electronics work, which, on its own, just isn't as powerful as fifteen musicians banging away. Fortunately for those not in attendance, the fine folks at WFMU recorded the show and are now hosting it on their recently launched Free Music Archive. Snag it here.

live: Ducktails on WFMU
"Extended Jam"
I've posted about this Ducktails WFMU performance before but this morning the "Extended Jam" from Matt Mondanile's Christmas Eve live set on Marty McSorley's radio show came on shuffle and literally eased any sense of ill will in my mind. Like some sort of cosmic wave, it seemed to transcend the red brick walls of my apartment, as if it were seeping from the sun dazed clouds lofting above Greenpoint. I make allusions to music soundtracking life/nature rather often, but I'm 100% convinced that Ducktails "Extended Jam" was a curious case of nature soundtracking life, as if Matt Mondanile had found his way into Professor Coldheart's Freeze Machine and rid the world of darkness by showering the planet with sun-washed acid rays and mystical pellets of ease.

"Before They Walk Away"

Kurt Vile makes drowsy folk with synthetic accents reminiscent of waking up in the middle of the night in a NyQuil haze, Christmas lights blurry in your foggy eyes. That in mind, it makes perfect sense that Vile is a friend and collaborator of fellow Philadelphian Adam Granduciel of The War on Drugs, who lends his talent to Vile's project, playing such luminary instruments as "memory man gtrs, take-the-edge-off effects and sweet loops." (Vile also plays on The War on Drug's phenomenal Wagonwheel Blues.) One listen to Vile's weary folk, which at points feels not so far away from Mexican Summer label mate and Dylan acolyte The Tallest Man on Earth, while also channeling the bedroom stoner folk Lou Barlow churned out in the 90's with Sebadoh, and it's clear he knows his psychedelic American music history quite well. Mexican Summer will release Kurt Vile's God Is Saying This to You, a collection of "tracks from Overnite KV, a tour-only CDR made in conjunction with a European tour of Kurt's other project (The War on Drugs), along with a handful of extra tracks recorded specifically for this release", on 12" vinyl in March. I'd go ahead and pre-order here while the gettings good.

new: Ducktails
Not Not Fun
Ridgewood, NJ based Ducktails has a lot planned for 2009. Not only will he release his debut LP on Not Not Fun, but the tropical loop specialist is also set to release a slew of other recordings, including a split LP with Sun Araw on Not Not Fun, Ducktails "Acres of Shade" on Arbor, a Ducktails CD on Holy Mountain, a Ducktails CD compilation on RTB and a Ducktails/TOMUTONTTU 7". Big things indeed. If you can't wait for the LP, peep this radio session Ducktails did on the venerable NJ indie station WFMU. Also Ducktails is playing a host of upcoming shows in NYC, including one tomorrow night at Monster Island in BillyBurg.

sunday morning music: Lau Nau

This weeks edition of Sunday Morning Music comes to us from an especially magical artist from Finland, Lau Nau. Lau Nau has been getting alot of press lately, so much so that Google Reader informs me there have been 6 posts via various blogs and sites in the past week (and one from 2005 by WFMU, proving once again that the NJ free-form radio masterminds are wayyyy ahead of the curve). Since being bombarded with Lau Nau tracks all week, I knew Sunday Morning Music would be the perfect place to show off her floating dreamscapes. Highly rec'd for fans of Animal Collective's softer side, White Rainbow, Eno, etc.
