bootleg: Lotus Plaza 9/22/09

"Red Oak Way"
I never really thought Lotus Plaza would play any shows, so it was quite a pleasant surprise to see this pop up on the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound/Lotus Plaza blog this morning. "Direct from the mixing desk courtesy of Nathan Brown & Robby Kee," two dudes behind Tree Creature, this set finds Lockett Pundt's beginning with a hazy warble of synthetic mist, before exploding into a sonic barrage about ten minutes in. Of course, the barrage gives way to some blippy, ambient pops and skips. Not as wrapped in ten layers of gauze as you might expect, the bootleg finds Pundt channeling friend Noah Lennox's realm of sampled percussive rhythms and bouncing, looped vocals.

mix: Sleep

"When You Sleep"

A little over a year ago, as per request by a few readers, I published a second sleep mix. In retrospect, the mix isn't as much as ambient, as it is ethereal, although it does contain incredibly still moments of crystalline wonder. The goal with this mix was to provide a foray into dreams, a sort of Alice in Wonderland/The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe/Coraline portal into a sea of dreams, beginning with Vera November's transcendent cover of Arthur Russell's "Our Last Night Together" and ending in a wash of sea sounds and lilting forest voices, care of White Rainbow's "Awakening." While I don't consider this to be an incredibly well mixed mix, after recently rediscovering it, I truly felt like it accomplished its goal of leading the listener from the drowsy conscious world into the luminous world of dreams.

2. Stars of the Lid- Even if You're Never Awake (Deuxieme)

mp3: new Atlas Sound & Deerhunter

Time Warp
Bradford Cox just dropped another virtual 7" over on the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound/Lotus Plaza blog. The new Atlas Sound digi-release, which pairs "Springtime Instrumental b/w Time Warp", is sort of an early '60s throwback, complete with kaleidoscopic riffs, shakers of all sorts and nostalgic, pre-pubescent drum fills. "Time Warp" is sort of an anti-suburbia sketch, which, while being slightly negative, comes across in an "I feel your pain" kinda way, ala the film Suburbia, which sucks, but I sort of really like/relate to. All in all, a nice little Earth Day surprise, on top of that new Deerhunter jam "Rainwater Cassette Exchange", which the band let loose last week. Does this mean were getting the follow up to Microcastle and Let The Blind... sooner than expected? One can only hope.

new: Atlas Sound virtual 7"

"Trials and Tribulations"

It's been a while but Bradford Cox dropped another in a collection of endess virtual 7"'s on the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound/Lotus Plaza blog. "Solo or the Square" finds Bradford hitting his sweet spot, with a playful, jack-in-the-box-esque loop and stream of consciousness vocals, which, over time, mutate from a candy sweet croon to an almost dubby sort of acid flange.

The B-side, "Memorial Corridor", sounds like a 3 second guitar sample manipulated, and transmitted via CB radio to a satellite base station (ala Christmas on Mars), where it eventually morphs into the sort of jangly guitar-distorted vocal exercise we've come to know, love and expect from Mr. Cox. Just the sort of thing to keep Atlas Sound fans happy/hungry until Bradford drops Logos, or some other record, later this year.

live: Deerhunter @ Noise Pop

"I Lived On Hazel Street"

High quality full length video from Deerhunter's free performance (w/ Pains of Being Pure at Heart) at San Francisco's Noise Pop last week. Smothered in fog and lights, this is probably the best live footage of Deerhunter I've ever seen. Oh yeah, and Bradford's wearing a Patagonia fleece. Weird. Expect more videos on Wolfgang's Vault as the week continues.

new: Deerhunter

"With Elaborate Designs"

If you follow the Deerhunter blog, or attended their hometown Halloween show in ATL a few weeks back, you probably already knew about On Platts Eyotts Island. Deerhunter pressed 200 limited edition cassette copies of the session, which features stripped down versions of Cryptograms gem "Spring Hall Convert", as well as some choice Microcastle material, and you can now listen digitally courtesy of 4AD. From the press release:
This session was recorded during the evening of the 15th of September at Studio Plateaux, a DIY studio nestled on the Platts Eyott island - a nature reserve with the western end designated as Green Belt - on the Thames - London.

The idea behind the session was in memory of John Peel and his famous Radio 1 sessions. The studio equipment is a rare collection of vintage Ribbon microphones, preamps, tape machines and effects, all resourced over many years and sourced from around the world.

Bradford Cox recorded the songs like a continuous stream of consciousness; the session intended to be listened in order and uninterrupted. Kristian Craig Robinson (Capitol K) produced and engineered the session, while Bradford reworked several songs from Microcastle, a ne version of ‘Spring Hall Convert’ from Cryptograms and a couple of unreleased songs.

we saw: Deerhunter @ Music Hall

"Light of My Focus, Light of My Bed"
Friday night we saw Deerhunter for the third time since Microcastle leaked in June. While their LPR show was outstanding, the show at Music Hall had all the trappings of a classic rock show, minus all the cliches. The band jumped right into killer material ("Cryptograms", "Never Stops"), building momentum through kraut-rock rhythms and an absolutely bombastic wall of sound. As per usual, MHOW sounded impeccable, as you can tell from NYC Tapers recording (equally as impeccable, as expected. Dude srsly's got it going on.) After "Never Stops", Bradford and Co. dropped it down a knotch for Flourescent Grey's "Dr. Glass" which seamlessly segued into Cryptogram's "Hazel Street." Reverb and Delay pedals were in full effect. Things were getting epic. At this point there had been maybe two lines of banter, pre-show at that, making this show inherently different than LPR's Bradford story-teller show. They were on fire. The crowd knew it. And I think they did as well.

If that wasn't enough, they segued "Hazel Street" into "Nothing Ever Happened", arguably the most in your face (and poppiest) of the Microcastle material, and easily one of the best Deerhunter jams for highway rocking. 5 songs in and they were absolutely murdering it. The first part of their set took the ole North 6 to the astral plane, where they brought out parts of the Microcastle suite and "Flourescent Grey." The only thing missing was "Strange Lights", but no complaints on our end.

Get the show from NYC Taper asap.

highlight: NYC Taper

I Miss Maxell XL-II's

Let me count the reasons why I love NYC Taper
1) Deerhunter @ (le)Poission Rouge
2) Built to Spill performing Perfect From Now On @ T5.
3) Dinosaur Jr.'s monstrous opening set from that evening @T5.
4) Sigur Ros @ the United Palace Theatre. Both Nights.
5) Atlas Sound's woozy set opening for Stereolab
6) Kria Brekkan's stunning set at the Lutheran Church down the block. (And accompanying video of Olof Arnalds breastfeeding/singing a lullaby to her son)

and last, but surely not least, nor last for that matter.

7)of Montreal's Caligula-esque performance @ Roseland

As always, everything is also available as FLAC. If that's not motivation to upgrade your broadband speed and pick up a new external hard drive, I'm not sure what is. NYC Taper also has a CMJ Showcase at Cake Shop, Thursday October 23 from 3pm-7pm. Don't you love Free day parties during CMJ, best excuse ever to call in sick.

we saw: Deerhunter

"It Never Stops"

We hadn't planned on seeing Deerhunter Tuesday night and that was dumb. Luckily, my brain shifted into gear after a cross country flight, and I was lucky enough to find 2 for face on C-List by 8 a.m. Nice. Microcastle, soon to be released by Kranky, has been leaked for almost 3 months and according to iTunes I've played it over 25 times. Yeah, it's good...damn good. When we saw the band play an afternoon set at McCarren (with King Khan) earlier in the summer, we were psyched at how great the rhythmic noise of Microcastle sounded live. Surely, the band had expanded on the ethereal noize and distorted melodies of Cryptograms, but Microcastle is anything but a pop record...Or is it just that, Deerhunter's pop record.

Bradford mentioned at (le) Poisson Rouge that New York City is noted for blending the "avant garde with the pop" and that pretty much summed up the evening. That, and noize. Lots of it. Loud motherfucking noize that left us with nothing to do but stare at the floor and shake the shit out of our heads until we were dizzy, as if we just spent an hour and a half on an amphetamine driven merry-go-round. It was beautifully ecstatic the way Bradford, Whitney and Lockett built a massive wall of noize behind three guitars, bolstered by an incredibly tight and, dare I say, groovy rhythm section that really is the nuts and bolts of Deerhunter. Without Moses Archuletta's ferocious drumming and Joshua Fauver's driving bass, the band would have no basis for the fervent noize excursions that they invoke. Truth be told, it's the mess of noise, behind simple, yet utterly insatiable rhythms that make Deerhunter great.

We got a good mix of Cryptograms and Microcastle material, including "Intro->Agoraphobia", which we hadn't heard live yet, and which Bradford sang, yet Lockett sings on record. Interesting, although I definitely prefer Lockett's vocal on the first proper Microcastle jam. "Never Stops" and "Nothing Ever Happened" both raged, as did "Strange Lights", "Hazle St" and "Saved By Old Times." Deerhunter is jetting off to Europe this week, but will be back in the states very soon, with shows in both Brooklyn and NYC. I recommend peeping at least one of them, even if you caught them at the pool, because there is nothing better than being drenched in explosive noize in the dark, while bursts of flaming colors blanket the band.

If you've yet to hear the melodic majesty of Microcastle, peep this vid for two of the albums highlights, which don't sound as good as on record, but you'll get the drift.

we saw: King Khan & the Shrins and Deerhunter

"It Never Stops"
{Bad Ass Photo's by Dese'Rae L. Stage}

First things first, King Khan is a fucking lunatic. That said, it should come as no surprise that he threw hundreds of banana's at the audience, spit the remnants at us, jumped on us, got a Beeej from Duffy (via Spin cover), hated on Germany, threw some more bananas, made a beautiful Man-gina, walked around with flowers in his ass crack, pulled Tim Harrington's cock out and then poured beer down his pants. If that wasn't enough, he rocked the park hard and then Deerhunter came on.

Bradford and Co did not disappoint, performing crowd favorites like "Strange Lights" and "Flourescent Grey", while also touching on Microcastle jams "Never Stops", "Nothing Ever Happened" and "Saved By Old Times." We didn't stick around for the Black Lips, but from the looks of it they brought there usual antics, and more King Khan pranks. Definitely a lot sweeter than the line at the MGMT show.

Pitchfork Day 3: King Khan and His Shrines

"Throw Some Mother Fucking Trash"
(This Great Photo by dde)
Day 3 of Pitchfork got off to a slow start, but that's just because we were still drained from having our heads warped by Animal Collective. While Mahjongg played one of the most unexpectedly enjoyable sets of the weekend, Sunday didn't really get started until King Khan and The Shrines brought their sex'd up punking psychedelic soul revue to the B stage. Needless to say, the dude did not disappoint, delivering a set that exceeded the hype and cemented Khan as the Indian love child of Iggy Pop and James Brown. We were also treated, although we didn't know it at the time, to a short set by King Khan, Bradford Cox and Jay Reatard later in the evening, but it was nothing like Khan's ridiculously raw powered afternoon show. Really excited to see him tear up McCarren Pool in a few weeks, when he comes to Brooklyn with Black Lips and Deerhunter (August 3rd).

new: Atlas Sound

LOOOOPY
It's been nearly two months since we posted anything by Deerhunter frontman/Atlas Sound craftsman Bradford Cox, which is the equivalent to five years for most artists. If you've been playing along, every so often Bradford releases a MicroMix or a Digital 7" or a homemade EP or whatever the fuck release he wants to put out via the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound/ Lotus Plaza blog. It happens quite often but regardless of Bradford's insane output, my heart always begins to flutter at the site of a new post on the Deerhunter blog (Yes, my life has reached that pathetic point where I get very excited about obscure blog only releases). Cox's new Amsterdam Midi digital 7" is another fine example of what one man can do in a hotel room with a laptop and midi controller. I'd like to think my stone-made compositions were this hypnotic, but they definitely don't compare with the looping transcendence Cox composed in an Amsterdam hotel. As always, highly rec'd.

P.S. The new Deerhunter album is... how do I say...ah yes... sick.

new member: Deerhunter

"You're a mystical child"
As usual, lots of activity on the deerhunter/atlas sound/lotus plaza blog, but this time it's not just Bradford posting some sweet, gauzy bedroom jams. This time, it's big news...or a month late April fools joke. So, without further adieu, Deerhunter would like to announce their new guitarist. Her name is Whitney and she rocks a pretty sweet looking mother of pearl Jaguar. As for the details, here's what Bradford had to say "I've known Whitney since she was a cheerleader with a bad attitude at Marietta High School." That's it. Bradford had Whitney introduce herself with a micromix, which I'm pretty excited about, as it contains two of my all time favorite songs, off two of my favorite albums, from two of my favorite artists. The songs in question, Bob Dylan's "Isis" from Desire and Springsteen's "Atlantic City" from the masterful Nebraska. If this mix is any indicator, Whitney's got pretty good taste in the classics, with the Stones ("Moonlight Mile"), The Faces ("Oh La La"), Bowie ("Aladdin Sane"), and Patti Smith ("Rock and Roll Nigger") each making an appearance. Looking forward to seeing what this chicks got up her sleeve. Godspeed Whitney.

"I see angels appear"
In what should come as a no surprise, Bradford Cox has released another set of tunes via the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound/Lotus Plaza blog. Posted at 4:51 am, "Bored Dub" and "No Longer" are ethereal wonders perfectly suited for watching the sun rise. I can personally vouch for that. Bradford, graveyard shift workers of the east coast thank you for the treat. Keep 'em coming.

new: Atlas Sound

"Right On, Right On"
It seems like every other day Bradford Cox releases a new tune via the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound/ Lotus Plaza blog. Not that we have a problem with that, in fact, we like it so much we've subscribed to the blog via RSS, which is a great way to keep up with the outpouring of music Bradford has unleashed in the past months. Last night he posted the following.
After the Deerhunter show at the Market Hotel Friday, I became extremely ill. Lockett and I had both been suffering from a severe flu, but I think exhaustion and too much cigarette smoke pushed me beyond my limits and by Sunday, the 13th I had to go to the emergency room in Manhattan. I honestly felt like I was dying and there is no better time to explore and relive small tears in your past than to have them floating in front of you in a haze of painkillers and i.v. bags.
"April 13th" is a loopy bit of Animal Collective-like happy schizo pop. Warm and inviting, weird and charming all at the same time. According to Bradford "this should give you an idea of what to expect of a solo A.S. performance" (he had been performing with a band, see here, here). "April 13th" is a doozy; nearly twelve minutes of floating melody hung in a perpetual purgatory like state, cuddled with pharmaceutically entranced vocals and all the subtle nuances of sound you'd expect from a Deerhunter or Atlas Sound song. It's reminiscent of "Youth Energy" in form and length, but more focused than the instrumental from the How I Escaped The Prison of Fractals EP. The bells and dreamy, aesthetic optimism also bring Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel standouts "Quarantined" and "On Guard." It's a behemoth of love soaked in high grade opiates, bells and synths, looped over and over for your aural pleasure. "Right On Right On" (or is it "Ride On, Ride On").

Atlas Sound- April 13th

P.S- I thought I had this song on repeat, but it just segued perfectly into Augustus Pablo's dub plate classic "Unity Dub." So much so that I didn't realize the song had ended until I heard Pablo's signature reverb/echo/delay flying snare hits. A compliment if there ever was one.

new mix: Ambient Sleep

"It's our last night together"
A long time ago we posted a sleep mix from the now deceased Knuckles McGregor. Apparently it knocked y'all right into a coma, however, immune systems adapt and that old mix just wasn't doing the trick anymore. Luckily, we're back with a fresh set of new agey dream music, the type of stuff DMT-heads listen to for fun.

Ambient Sleep is almost entirely instrumental, the exception being Vera November's rendition of the late Arthur Russell's "Our Last Night Together". (Although Grizzly Bear's "Granny Diner" does include the absurdist "Why don't you do any dishes? Why?/ I always clean up the kitchen" at the very end of the song.) Also included are some ambient classics by Tangerine Dream and Johan Johannson, a few soon to be classics by Stars of the Lid and Deerhunter, a totally wunderstruck cover of the Loveless jam "What You Want" and some of that eerie magic from There Will Be Blood. If you're having trouble sleeping, or you're simply looking to transcend space and time, this is your soundtrack. Guaranteed sweet dreams.

nu musick: Atlas Sound

I Slept On The Bridge

Anyone interested in pink noise, atmospherics, ethereal landscapes and drones should head over to the the Deerhunter Blog where head hunter Bradford Cox is sharing a shit ton of music from his Atlas Sound project for free. And by shit ton I mean a 2006 long playing CD-R How I Escaped the Prison of Fractals, some recent demos, a sweet Valentine's day mix and the brand new Orange Ohms Glow EP, which was recorded February 5-8 2008. So, yeah, I'd say that's pretty recent. A must for anyone into lo-fi home recordings and psych loops.

Cox will bring Atlas Sound to NYC on 2/23 and 2/24, for shows at the Mercury Lounge and the Music Hall of Williamsburg.
