mp3: Atlas Sound covers Fleetwood Mac

"No One Is Listening"

Bradford continues to do his thing, this time on a romantic backyard acoustic version of Fleetwood Mac's "Walk A Thin Line." I think I can hear some banjo in the mix, which gives it a sort of campfire feel, same time, my ears may be tricked. Either way, another gem courtesy of Mr. Cox.

Bobkast #28: Daydreaming of Topless Sunbathers

"Smoke My Reefer In The Bathroom"
I've lived in a lot of places and all of them have had watering holes. In Connecticut, it was the sound. North Carolina, the creek. New Jersey, the lake. Upstate NY, the rope swing river. Louisiana, the gulf. Wyoming, the Snake River. Yet, despite being an island, NYC just doesn't have any swimming hole worthy waterways.

And so, instead, we head to the roof. Kiddie pools can be purchased at the Polish grocery store near the park. Coolers are hauled up ladders, extension cords thrown like grappling hooks from fire escapes in order to power up the boom box. Unfortunately, we don't have a hose, so we have to fill the kiddie pool with Dixie Cups. Hopefully it won't take more than three hours. Our beach chairs set up, lemonade in hand and feet soaking in the lukewarm kiddie pool water, we doze off into a sea of daydreams...

... The crisp sparkle of the Mediterranean glistening like fresh glaze on a sour cream doughnut. North Africans kicking the football in the sand. A few french girls playing kadima. Thousands of beautiful topless women soaking up the sun. Its just enough to make you forget that you are on a roof in North Greenpoint across the street from a stone importer-exporter and down the block from the glowing blue phosphoressence of the Newtown Creek Water Treatment Facility.

It's not much, but it's all we got.

bobkast #26: Another Day in the Park

"Dreaming, Dreaming"
With the thermometer hitting upwards of 85 in Greenpoint the past two weekends, it's safe to say that Summer is almost here. It's also safe to say that you can find me in the park, chilling with friends, soaking up sun and drinking Margarita's in styrofoam cups from the Turkey's Nest. My advice with this mix; burn a copy to CD, then transfer that CD to Maxell XL-II, pop it into your Radio Raheem-esque boom box, pick up a blanket and go lay out in your neighborhood park. Bring booze. Smokes. Buy an ice cream. (or Italian ice.) Stop being so pale.

mp3: new Atlas Sound & Deerhunter

Time Warp
Bradford Cox just dropped another virtual 7" over on the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound/Lotus Plaza blog. The new Atlas Sound digi-release, which pairs "Springtime Instrumental b/w Time Warp", is sort of an early '60s throwback, complete with kaleidoscopic riffs, shakers of all sorts and nostalgic, pre-pubescent drum fills. "Time Warp" is sort of an anti-suburbia sketch, which, while being slightly negative, comes across in an "I feel your pain" kinda way, ala the film Suburbia, which sucks, but I sort of really like/relate to. All in all, a nice little Earth Day surprise, on top of that new Deerhunter jam "Rainwater Cassette Exchange", which the band let loose last week. Does this mean were getting the follow up to Microcastle and Let The Blind... sooner than expected? One can only hope.

new: Atlas Sound virtual 7"

"Trials and Tribulations"

It's been a while but Bradford Cox dropped another in a collection of endess virtual 7"'s on the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound/Lotus Plaza blog. "Solo or the Square" finds Bradford hitting his sweet spot, with a playful, jack-in-the-box-esque loop and stream of consciousness vocals, which, over time, mutate from a candy sweet croon to an almost dubby sort of acid flange.

The B-side, "Memorial Corridor", sounds like a 3 second guitar sample manipulated, and transmitted via CB radio to a satellite base station (ala Christmas on Mars), where it eventually morphs into the sort of jangly guitar-distorted vocal exercise we've come to know, love and expect from Mr. Cox. Just the sort of thing to keep Atlas Sound fans happy/hungry until Bradford drops Logos, or some other record, later this year.

bootleg: Atlas Sound NYE

"We Will Never Ever..."

Due to the ubiquity of Atlas Sound posts in 2K8, I'll keep this one short. Bradford Cox played a (surprise?) hometown show on New Year's Eve at the Drunken Unicorn in Atlanta. He prefaces it by saying "Happy New Year everybody...Did everybody get kissed? (Yeah) Good. Well, I'm here to depress to the shit out of you with my longwinded ambient music." From then on its a typically droopy, psychedelic mess of spiraling loops, droney synths and freight-train powered drum beats. Consisting of choice cuts from last year's phenomenal, and absolutely gooey, Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel ("Quick Canal", "Cold As Ice"), the set also features "Logos", the self-titled track from the accidentally leaked Atlas Sound album Bradford planned to be the follow up to Let The Blind.... Southern Shelter has the whole thing for DL, in FLAC too! If you're looking for a companion to aid in slipping back into the Holiday food coma, this is it. Highly recommended.

highlight: NYC Taper

I Miss Maxell XL-II's

Let me count the reasons why I love NYC Taper
1) Deerhunter @ (le)Poission Rouge
2) Built to Spill performing Perfect From Now On @ T5.
3) Dinosaur Jr.'s monstrous opening set from that evening @T5.
4) Sigur Ros @ the United Palace Theatre. Both Nights.
5) Atlas Sound's woozy set opening for Stereolab
6) Kria Brekkan's stunning set at the Lutheran Church down the block. (And accompanying video of Olof Arnalds breastfeeding/singing a lullaby to her son)

and last, but surely not least, nor last for that matter.

7)of Montreal's Caligula-esque performance @ Roseland

As always, everything is also available as FLAC. If that's not motivation to upgrade your broadband speed and pick up a new external hard drive, I'm not sure what is. NYC Taper also has a CMJ Showcase at Cake Shop, Thursday October 23 from 3pm-7pm. Don't you love Free day parties during CMJ, best excuse ever to call in sick.

We Saw: Stereolab/Atlas Sound

"Don't worry be happy things will get better naturally..."

Bitchin' photo by Bill
Sadly, this bobkat couldn't watch the (hilarious) trainwreck known as Sarah Palin, but happily, it was because I was getting a facefull of Stereolab...which was only made more poignant considering the top story on Pitchfork when I got home from the show. McCain family fans aside, the show was a real victory for the people, who were treated to Atlas Sound bringin' some ooey gooey shoegaze, followed by Stereolab's funkified, Chemical Chords heavy set, sweeping the crowd into a frenzy of refreshingly non-political fervor. Is it too late for McCain to ask Lætitia Sadier to be his running mate? She's certainly a hot older lady. Oh but she's French... trop mauvais...

Here's some video from Beggar's really awesome youtube channel, showing the band playing fan favorite "Percolator" in front of just a hundred or so fans in the UK

Bobkast #15: Out of the Darkness...

"In The Doldrums, So The Story Goes"

Composed on an early fall flight from Idaho to LaGuardia, after a brief visit to Hell's Canyon, this mix is a subtle, woozy collection of songs that drift and float through both darkness and light, as if they were specks of rainbow dust that meander through the atmosphere only to occassionally brush up against your shirt and get you thinking about the size of the planet. We're big. We're small. We're infinite. Whatever we are, this subdued mix of fuzzy psych pop and muted downtempo electro is just the thing to transport you from the steamy slums of summer into the blissful shades of autumn

we saw: Atlas Sound

"I'm Waiting To Be Changed"
One might not think South Street Seaport's outdoor Mall food court vibe would be the best place to see an Atlas Sound show. Truth is Bradford Cox's loopy lo-fi psych-pop is probably better suited for a black light lite basement, or on headphones in your bedroom high on Nyquil. However, somehow, Bradford was able to translate the warmth of Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel for a crowd of screwed up kids, post-work partiers, middle aged couples, khaki clad tourists, and, yep, a few hipsters. Maybe it was my spot in the crowd (upfront left), but the sound was impeccable, way better than at the No Age show. Bradford played a truly hypnotic, euphoric set of Let The Blind... gems like "Quarantined," "Cold As Ice," as well as new cut "Logos," which Bradford said would be the last song on his next album. Be sure to check out the video of "Logos."

remix: The Chap "They Have A Name" (Atlas Sound Remix)

"Hearthrob Hits The Ladies"

Blogger just did something really odd to these images after I uploaded them. Oddly enough, the bizarre manipulation couldn't be more appropriate for this post. Our friend Brooke has been peeping us to The Chap for a while and while I've enjoyed their macabre synth pop, it should be no surprise, that I'm really digging on Bradford Cox's remix of The Chap's "They Have A Name." As per usual, Cox takes the basic framework and trips it out with a series of noisy oscillations, jolting found sounds and other Atlas Sound goodness. It's gotten to the point where we might as well rename Chocolate Bobka, "The Totally Gay for Bradford Cox Blog." Bells and distortion, a combination for the ages.

new: Atlas Sound

LOOOOPY
It's been nearly two months since we posted anything by Deerhunter frontman/Atlas Sound craftsman Bradford Cox, which is the equivalent to five years for most artists. If you've been playing along, every so often Bradford releases a MicroMix or a Digital 7" or a homemade EP or whatever the fuck release he wants to put out via the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound/ Lotus Plaza blog. It happens quite often but regardless of Bradford's insane output, my heart always begins to flutter at the site of a new post on the Deerhunter blog (Yes, my life has reached that pathetic point where I get very excited about obscure blog only releases). Cox's new Amsterdam Midi digital 7" is another fine example of what one man can do in a hotel room with a laptop and midi controller. I'd like to think my stone-made compositions were this hypnotic, but they definitely don't compare with the looping transcendence Cox composed in an Amsterdam hotel. As always, highly rec'd.

P.S. The new Deerhunter album is... how do I say...ah yes... sick.

new member: Deerhunter

"You're a mystical child"
As usual, lots of activity on the deerhunter/atlas sound/lotus plaza blog, but this time it's not just Bradford posting some sweet, gauzy bedroom jams. This time, it's big news...or a month late April fools joke. So, without further adieu, Deerhunter would like to announce their new guitarist. Her name is Whitney and she rocks a pretty sweet looking mother of pearl Jaguar. As for the details, here's what Bradford had to say "I've known Whitney since she was a cheerleader with a bad attitude at Marietta High School." That's it. Bradford had Whitney introduce herself with a micromix, which I'm pretty excited about, as it contains two of my all time favorite songs, off two of my favorite albums, from two of my favorite artists. The songs in question, Bob Dylan's "Isis" from Desire and Springsteen's "Atlantic City" from the masterful Nebraska. If this mix is any indicator, Whitney's got pretty good taste in the classics, with the Stones ("Moonlight Mile"), The Faces ("Oh La La"), Bowie ("Aladdin Sane"), and Patti Smith ("Rock and Roll Nigger") each making an appearance. Looking forward to seeing what this chicks got up her sleeve. Godspeed Whitney.

more: Atlas Sound

"I see angels appear"
In what should come as a no surprise, Bradford Cox has released another set of tunes via the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound/Lotus Plaza blog. Posted at 4:51 am, "Bored Dub" and "No Longer" are ethereal wonders perfectly suited for watching the sun rise. I can personally vouch for that. Bradford, graveyard shift workers of the east coast thank you for the treat. Keep 'em coming.

new: Atlas Sound

"Right On, Right On"
It seems like every other day Bradford Cox releases a new tune via the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound/ Lotus Plaza blog. Not that we have a problem with that, in fact, we like it so much we've subscribed to the blog via RSS, which is a great way to keep up with the outpouring of music Bradford has unleashed in the past months. Last night he posted the following.
After the Deerhunter show at the Market Hotel Friday, I became extremely ill. Lockett and I had both been suffering from a severe flu, but I think exhaustion and too much cigarette smoke pushed me beyond my limits and by Sunday, the 13th I had to go to the emergency room in Manhattan. I honestly felt like I was dying and there is no better time to explore and relive small tears in your past than to have them floating in front of you in a haze of painkillers and i.v. bags.
"April 13th" is a loopy bit of Animal Collective-like happy schizo pop. Warm and inviting, weird and charming all at the same time. According to Bradford "this should give you an idea of what to expect of a solo A.S. performance" (he had been performing with a band, see here, here). "April 13th" is a doozy; nearly twelve minutes of floating melody hung in a perpetual purgatory like state, cuddled with pharmaceutically entranced vocals and all the subtle nuances of sound you'd expect from a Deerhunter or Atlas Sound song. It's reminiscent of "Youth Energy" in form and length, but more focused than the instrumental from the How I Escaped The Prison of Fractals EP. The bells and dreamy, aesthetic optimism also bring Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel standouts "Quarantined" and "On Guard." It's a behemoth of love soaked in high grade opiates, bells and synths, looped over and over for your aural pleasure. "Right On Right On" (or is it "Ride On, Ride On").

Atlas Sound- April 13th

P.S- I thought I had this song on repeat, but it just segued perfectly into Augustus Pablo's dub plate classic "Unity Dub." So much so that I didn't realize the song had ended until I heard Pablo's signature reverb/echo/delay flying snare hits. A compliment if there ever was one.

covers: Bjork

"My headphones, they saved my life"
Stereogum dropped a bomb today with the third incarnation of their covers project. We were big fans of the Drive: Automatic for the People(especially covers by Bodies of Water and Shout Out Louds), and, of course, the fantastic OKX: Tribute to OK Computer. This time they've tackled Bjork's Post, the Icelandic princesses second solo record and some say her best. Personally, my favorite is Homogenic, but who cares.

After a first listen we're really digging Atlas Sound's version of Post closer "Headphones", which sounds like it was recorded in an underwater garden. S'gum really couldn't have picked a better candidate to deliver the classic lyric "My headphones, they saved my life/ Your tape, it lulled me to sleep." While Bradford gets dreamy, Dirty Projectors transform "Hyperballad" (aka the best Bjork song ever) into a jangly tropical jam akin to the sound of the Belizean jungle. In a similar use of summery sounds, Barcelona's El Guincho does his loopy SP-404 shit on "Cover Me."

Also really feeling the distortion fueled, shot gun blasts of "Army of Me" by the Liars, which is so sinister it makes the original sound like a lullaby. Some covers don't stray too far from the original, as is the case with High Places "The Modern Things" and Bell's "It's Oh So Quiet". Another highlight, one sure to end up on mixtapes for years to come, is Final Fantasy & Ed Droste's (Grizzly Bear) cover of "Possibly Maybe", which gets the blessing of Owen Pallette's signature string arrangements and Ed's ethereal voice. Also pretty impressed by White Hinterland's "I Miss You." Basically, this covers album is the f'ing shit, so download it asap. Full .zip file below, as well as a few of our favorites.

Oh yeah, if you haven't seen the new Bjork video for "Wanderlust", do it now. While the quality kinda sucks online, we're gonna highly recommend picking it up on DVD, especially for the 3-D version. Bjork, CGI and 3-D equals a stoned evening in heaven.

viddyo: Atlas Sound (Live)

"Do that Pat Metheny shit"

We told you about the Atlas Sound show we saw in late February at Johnny Brenda's in Philly. Now you can watch a video clip from that very gig! Here, Bradford and co. spacily meander their way through Let the Blind... standout "Cold As Ice", which they are playing on borrowed gear courtesy of the Dirty Projectors. (Thanks to P4K for the tip.)
