new: White Rainbow

Flanger Pedal

White Rainbow has been uploading new, rare and unreleased tracks to his Bandcamp site over the past couple months. First was Boring Guitar Music, which was recorded live in one afternoon under the pretenese that WR wanted to abandon synth & beat oriented tunes and simply make, you guessed it, "boring guitar music." Fans of Frippertronics and Emerald's (and surely Mark McGuire's solo work) will get down on the digital new age soundscapes Forkner crafted for this release, whose cover was designed by Megazord.

The latest addition to the White Rainbow Bandcamp is a digital version of a cassette release on Gnar tapes, as well as "Skys Position (for Tom Blood)" and "Gnar", two tracks that would've been the 3LP on New Clouds. So, I guess you can consider Sea Thru the lost surprise ending of New Clouds now available on the director's cut "name your own price (or free") digital download. Who said the new age wasn't any good?!

PS- While your at it, check out the redonk Mexi-cumbia-house-%^$? mixes he just posted on his tumblr.

mp3: We Like Cats "Money Dub Money"

"THESE CATS CAN DO RAINBOW BASKETBALL SHOTS ACROSS THE SOLAR SYSTEM"
The entire concept of We Like Cats is completely absurd; take three of Portland's wildest musicians (Adam Forker, Honey Owens & Eva Salens) and watch them crank the low ends and rhyme about cats. What followed the session was a mythical germination period, which Marriage Records describes thoroughly:
Original tracks for their debut LP Proper Eats were recorded at Marriage Studio in Portland, Oregon on two sizzingly hot summer days in 2009.The tape were then buried in a small plot of dirt next to the parking lot through the rainy season until the winter of 09/10, at which point they were properly saturated with the deepest filth of soul fire dub juice, cooked in an oven for 7 hours on low heat, strung back up in the studio, versioned, dubbed and mastered for thickest possible vibrations."
That's about as apt a description as you are going to find. The warped and Tubby-inspired party collection is available on LP from Marriage Records, and the vinyl comes with "4 extended bonus dub version mp3s" for all you soundwoofin' heads lurking in the swamp.

mix: Sleep

"When You Sleep"

A little over a year ago, as per request by a few readers, I published a second sleep mix. In retrospect, the mix isn't as much as ambient, as it is ethereal, although it does contain incredibly still moments of crystalline wonder. The goal with this mix was to provide a foray into dreams, a sort of Alice in Wonderland/The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe/Coraline portal into a sea of dreams, beginning with Vera November's transcendent cover of Arthur Russell's "Our Last Night Together" and ending in a wash of sea sounds and lilting forest voices, care of White Rainbow's "Awakening." While I don't consider this to be an incredibly well mixed mix, after recently rediscovering it, I truly felt like it accomplished its goal of leading the listener from the drowsy conscious world into the luminous world of dreams.

mix: White Rainbow

"SHUFBOOGISDARKFUNK"
Psychedelic axe murderer Adam Forkner, better known as Portland's White Rainbow, has seemingly escaped from the Prism of Eternal Now and resurfaced with this mix tape of "unfinished/weird/fucked/bad/boring/bangin'/terrible-use-of-MIDI-presets/cool-idea-that-goes-on-too-long tracks made between 2007-2008." Quotes Forkner, "this is definitely in a more upbeat/summer/pop/rave/hip hop/flange vibe than most of my more 'serious' musics. but sometimes i gotta get the led out!" Summer Boogie Breezers: Tha Mixtape 2008 was originally released in a limited batch of 20 CD-R and sold out of the back of Forkner's trunk at gigs last Summer.
