TCC017 | Gem Trails Timeshares

Wormhole

Gem Trails is Trevor (Woodsman/Firetalk Records) nom de plume. A solo excursion into the nuanced underbelly of psychic reality. Timeshares is a visceral journey into the nether world where subtle fragments of life are rendered in slow-motion, only to be dissected, observed, and preserved for future citizens.

TCC016 | Airbird/Megafortress Split

SPLIT

Airbird/Megafortress C30 Split - TCC016
****art by Megazord****

Old skool buds team up to populate this C30 chromatic tape in various synthetic forms.

Airbird (aka Joel Ford of Games) brings big beats and piano house over transposed vox on jams like "Part of the Game" and "King for the Night", while "Somewhere in a Field" dwells in galactic gurgles and satellite field recordings. It's all encompassing, and I didn't even mention that he also tries on the Beach Boys "Surfer Girl." Airbird going H.A.M right now. #watchout

Listen to "Part of the Game"

Side B is a mythic region inhabited solely by Bill Gillim, the lone proprietor of the Megafortress. Over four movements, Gillim zones in on the internal chaos, harvesting tones from a DX-7 in the midst of the night. "Allelujah" is a hybrid journey into a prophetic digital gospel, while "Mega Fortress IV" showcases Gillim's way with an EWI and VE-20. Pretty much just waiting for Kanye to jack a Megafortress vox samp at this point. Oh yeah, and if you haven't seen his video for Freedom From Fear, watch it now. It's not on the tape, but it's striking, and an excellent example of where Megafortress is heading...I think?

TCC015 | Flower Orgy

Red Hook

Supremely damaged hippie folk from Redhook's Flower Orgy, a fried concoction blended to distressed warmth over a few months on the southern tip of BK. The 4-some retreated to the woods of VT this past autumn and tracked this off-handed tape– a travellogue from a lost (or…found?) weekend in the woods. First release by this shambolic singers who meandered out of Bennington, VT a 'lil while back, includes an outstretched cover of Exuma's "22nd Century."

Snag here.

tape: Sultan The Moon

The Overture

Subtle tones creeping through the sentient Autumnal air, this reissue of Sultan's The Moon materializes from the invisible mist hanging in the air. Recorded in March of 2010, the tape fittingly begins with "Overture", a sweeping and grandiose opening statement, as faded and hushed as "There Goes My Girl", Sultan's wondrous tune that closed Blackburn Recordings Various Deficiancies V.1 compilation. Kayla gave The Moon, a collection of five extended cuts, to a handful of friends, but this is the first time it will be available in larger quantities. Highly recommended for fans of haunting acid-folk, damaged tape excursions and restrained beauty.

Listen to The Moon in its entirety at Sultan's Bandcamp.

Order from The Curatorial Club.

TCC011| CHUCK PERSON'S ECCOJAMS VOLUME.1

Demerol
He's baaaaaaaaack. DL's been on a hot streak, apparently absorbing solar rays and radiaton waves during the hottest summer ever(?!?!) and using them as the basis for hyper-accelerated replication. His latest incarnation comes in the form of a collection of screwed & fucked re-edits from the latest DL persona, Chuck Person. In the same realm as the recent Spend the Night with Games mix, the first volume of the appropriately titled ECCOJAMS takes clear nods from its 16-bit predecessor and sounds as if Chuck Person is actually remixing popular tracks with a Sega controller. Imagine DJ Screw & Araab Musiz's super chill/funny cousin fucking up top 40 classics through Parapper the Rapper interface. For gripping here.

mp3: Cascaders "Time Test"

Slob City

From neath the shadows of Mt. St. Helen's, Cascaders slaloms through rifts and rivers, occassionally peering up at the sky to guess the time. "Time Test" is another sojourn journey from the Pac North transplant, currently exiled to Slob City, just west of Garbage Town. While those adjectives may conjur visions of grey-scale noise dirges, "Time Test" is actually the exact opposite; the bioluminescent polar opposite to the globs of oil collecting in the Newtown Creek.

Cascaders "Time Test" will appear on the first Curatorial Club compilation, tentatively titled SummerSummerSummerSummerBeachBeachBeachBeachChillChillChillChillWaveWaveWaveWave.
More news on that very soon.

new: Spermwhales

"Hissssssy Fits"

Originally conceived as a gateway to meditation, the swirling ambiance of Spermwhales doesn't feature any nature recordings, but the natural world is most definitely present. The debut from the Maryland-based ambient artist, available on The Curatorial Club, hints at the tropi-waves ridden by Ducktails and other sea-faring experimentalists, but veers left, trading surf dotted melodies for hyper-dimensional exploration. Recorded earlier this year, The Seven Openings of the Head is I-Dosing for kids who want to seep below the "Gates of Hades" and simply zone out on the visuals in their mind. Order the cassette here.

In addition to his debut tape, Spermwhales also got together with videographer Winston Case and recorded a video for "Summer Grooves" in a field of mirrors and new age diaramas.

tape: Arches C20

Unsure of what lay before them, a few young men searching for reassurance headed into a church to explore the negative space floating above. What came out of the sessions is a C20 reimagining summer as a self-reflective purgatorial state, where everything slowed to a near-pause before life once again took over. Arches have been mining this lucid reflective state for a minute, examining the ins-and-outs of everyday life like molecular biologists searching for fractal bacteria under a microscope. What emerges is a sound that feels like opening a yearbook a year after you got it, and wondering what happened to all the faces you used to see wandering the halls daily. Some are forgotten, others etched into nooks of the mind.

Arches are currently streaming the new cassette, which features 3 new songs, as well as "Comin' Back Again, on their Bandcamp. Pre-order the cassette here.

mp3: Pigeons "en rêve"

"Life's A Gas"

TCC006 - Pigeons C28

On the trail of their Lunettes 7-inch on Soft Abuse and barely preceeding the release of Si Faustine on OESB, this collection of songs finds Pigeons exploring their inner realm. Originally intended to be a live release, TCC006 grew to include new songs (the intoxicating allure of "en rêve" and the luminous "Masks"), as well as homages to some of their favorite songs (Mark Bolan's "Life's A Gas", Dwight Twilley's "Looking for the Magic" and Jimmy Page and Del Shannon's "In My Time of Sorrow.") The B-side is filled with a live set recorded in the dead of winter on the Lower East Side and showcases songs from the forthcoming Si Faustine. Order here.

mix: Spend the Night With...Games

"Squeeze Me Tight"

Every summer has its banging mix of sensual classics and 2k10's (aka SUMMRUHLUV) is brought to you by Games. Childhood homeys Dan Lopatin and Joel Ford sit back and ride a .wav of sensual soul and slo-funk, screwing everything from Enya to Mobb Deep, leaving all the shawty's in short shorts wet in the wings. Spend the Night With...is a long drawn out affair that forgoes the trappings of hi-fi blends, cross-fades and mash-ups in favor of key, beat and vibe oriented transistions, a throw back to an era where adjusting the tempo and matching the beat weren't as easy as setting a loop in Ableton. Of course, that doesn't mean that Games don't go wild on it, as evidenced by their re-edit of Cool Notes "Spend the Night", which gets minced & baked, like some dancefloor garlic bread shit (huh?). Hot shit for a hawt wknd Amerika. A full color, double C60 tape edition is available for pre-gripping right now at The Curatorial Club. Epic cover at by Megazord.

Listen to the whole 2 hr mix below.

tape: Cascaders "Skybridge"

"Don't Want It"

(ED Note: This week I will be debuting new releases on The Curatorial Club. Pre-orders are currently available and will ship beginning June 8th. Check The Curatorial Club for more information.)

High above careening cliffs and the crashing white river rolling beneath, a samurai must balance his qi. Mind and body must work together to cross the ravenous ravine. Once in the middle, the wooden footpath shaking beneath, it is impossible not to look down. The samurai doesn't look down. He looks forward. Eyes on the prize, before, slowly, making his way to the otherside.

Much is the same with Cascaders, a project that owes as much to patience as it does minimal synths and drums. Permeating from the depths of Slob City, Cascaders projects the buzz of a late night TV drone onto lucid dreams inspired by Iasos. The musical project of Jamie Granato (Men & Women, Co-Founder of Group Tightener) is a luminous meditation on modern living in urban society, where the space floating between fits of consciousness is more telling than the random bits & pieces of memories left scattered on concrete streets.

Cascaders debut is a 4-song, 2-sided adventure in submergence. Preview the entire release over at Cascaders MySpace. While the digital sounds are tight, nothing compares to how the hypno-ambiance play out over 25 minutes on analog tape.

Pre-order Cascaders contribution to The Curatorial Club (TCC004) below.

video: John K. "My Only Girl"

"Come on Baby Spend the Night"

John K.'s Lost in the Beat has been in constant rotation in my mind since I first became enamored with John's synthetic bedroom sound. Blurring the line between bedroom syn-phonics and beat-oriented '80s pop, John has an unseemingly natural way of connecting disparate emotions and sounds until they seem so familiar that their roots are hard to trace. I always hear bits of New Order and Madonna, as well as John Maus, when I'm listening to Lost in the Beat, but where their tunes often come off as anthemic, or beguilling, John's music tends to be more personal. It's easy to hear where it comes from, possibly because it's one man making it, or maybe because he's just a guy with some instruments who happens to record when he's not teaching. "My Only Girl," one of the standouts on Lost in the Beat, is a slo-funk trip down memory lane, complete with mega-delayed guitars, an intoxicating bass line and snappy drums that come together over John's falsetto to create a perfect pallate for thinking about your one and only. Fittingly, Alex from Leftist Nautical Antiques recently edited down a bunch of Super 8mm footage he found at a garage sale into a video for the tune. "My Only Girl" will appear on the cassette version of Lost in the Beat, scheduled to come out shortly via a collaboration between Leftist Nautical Antiques and The Curatorial Club.
