upcoming: Lindstrom @ Studio B

"I Feel Space"
Tomorrow night Norweigan space-disco provocateur Hans-Peter Lindstrom will invade Brooklyn on the first night of a super select, increasingly rare U.S. tour, set to hit Chicago and San Francisco this weekend. While Lindstrom has played in the U.S. before, this may be his first time doing a "live set", as previous visits were either solo DJ sets or DJ sets with his cosmic partner-in-crime Prins Thomas. We at Bobka HQ are hoping for a full out exploration of Lindstrom's instant space oddity epic Where You Go I Go Too. If you don't hear from us on Friday, it's because we've been swept up in a wave of cosmic disco and are now chilling on an Alien space craft somewhere near Alpha Centauri. We've heard the view is fucking phenomenal from up there. (BTW, Lindstrom live at Studio B @ 1 AM.)

Bobkast #17: After Hours

"Everything In Its Right Place"
Saturday nights inevitably end in someone's living room, fresh beers in hand and pizza boxes, with only a few dusty crumbs inside, strewn across coffee tables.

The process begins around two, sometimes earlier, when one feels the itch to 'get the hell out of where ever they are', but doesn't want to end their night with an Irish exit from some god foresaken bar.

Idea! Rally likeminded troops and soldier on toward the closest corner store and the Pizza place (or Diner). Beer in one hand, 'za in the other, the herd moves toward a nearby apartment. They huddle around a dirty coffee table, TV on in the corner, some detective noir on mute. Smokes are smoked, 'za crushed, as brew soothes pizza burnt mouthes (or sits in the open bottle until said apt owner picks it up in the morning, sighs, and pours it down the drain).

Of course, there are tunes, perfect tunes that seem to breathe from barely lit walls. And dancing, on coffee tables, until legs get jello-y and eyes heavy, and the couch calls your name. You sit. Bite off a piece of half-chewed, totally burnt crust, wash it down with a lukewarm, soon-to-be-wounded soldier. You slowly drift off into the ether.

Bobkast #13: Let It Blossom

Our Wings Are Open Wide
(thanks to nikomatic for the photo)
After slowly emerging from the winter hibernation, there's no better way to embrace the joyousness of the rebirth season than by putting some life into your bones via raucous dance party in the sunshine. For the thirteenth edition of the Bobkast, we offer you a collection of beat-heavy tunes that we think sound just as good in the warm glory of Mother Nature as they do in the dark clubs where they originated. Ranging from dirty disco funk to sleek and squeeky electro, this mix is an electronic celebration, ideal for working out the kinks to your favorite dance moves (including the cabbage patch, running man, and egyptian strut) in anticipation of the summertime heat.

nu musick: Diskjokke

More great electronic music from Scandinavia

We first heard Oslo, Norway-based producer Diskjokke featured on the fantastic (and criminally underrated) Sunkissed mix last year, but it wasn't until recently that we were re-introduced to his novel take on the space disco sound. Using the laid-back, bongo-infused vibe of space disco as his template, Disjokke works in elements of German tech-house and French electro to give his music a unique sound and appeal.

Essentially, he has taken my three favorite sub-genres of electronic music and seamlessly blended them together to create some awesome tunes that sound equally as great on a pair of headphones as they do blasting from large stereo speakers. Fans of Lindstrom, Kompakt, and Ed Banger will all find something to like in Diskjokke's music.

DFA: Still Going Theme

"Piano House Revival"

DFA Records has secured the exclusive license to the soon-to-be-anthemic single from NYC electronic duo Still Going. While the 12" doesn't officially hit the streets until September 25, the title track, Still Going Theme, has been enjoying some healthy buzz ever since James Murphy spun it at last years DFA Holiday party. Since then it was featured on Lindstrom & Prins Thomas' acclaimed Essential Mix, and will be included on LCD Soundsystem's much-anticipated FABRICLIVE 36 mix.

The piano propelled track is an instant crowd pleaser and according to Fact Magazine will "make even the darkest, grimiest nightclub feel like the sun-splashed pool party of your dreams" and convince the listener that "life is fundamentally good." Decide for yourself by listening here, and purchase a full, digital copy here.

Lindstrom & Prins Thomas

"The Kings of Cosmic House"

Hailing from the musical hotspot of Scandanavia (Norway to be exact), Hans Peter Lindstrom & Prins Thomas have helped define a new genre of electronic music lovingly known as "Space Disco" or "Cosmic House." As the name suggests, the music is beat oriented, but much more relaxed and psychedelic than traditonal disco or house music. The "Essential Mix" posted below is an excellent crash course in the unique sound of the genre.

Both Lindstrom and his counterpart Prins Thomas are successful electronic musicians/producers/remixers/DJ's in their own right: Lindstrom owns the Feedelity label and originally made a name for himself in 2005 with the incredible "I Feel Space" 12"; Prins Thomas, meanwhile, maintains an impressive and extensive resume of remixes and production credits. But true to the old saying, two heads ARE better than one, as is demonstrated in all of the duo's work.

The pair originally joined forces in 2003 out of an intense and mutual admiration for each other's work. 2005 saw the release of the aptly titled LP "Lindstrom & Prins Thomas" on Eskimo Records. The album was lauded for its striking originality and incorporation of 'organic' instruments (mainly the drums) in the creation of 'electronic' music. It was so well received, in fact, that the pair recently went back into the studio and remixed the entire album themselves, trying to create a more club-friendly dance floor vibe. The result: Reinterpretations, another exceptional album for the pair and definite milestone in the Space Disco genre.

Check out the results below.
