Brosef
A few months back I posted the trailer for Nothing Yet, the directorial debut of James Benson of the infamous Frat Dad. (R.I.P?) The film follows the life of a mythical suburban punk band who go on a 3 day tour. Lots of stuff happens/Nothing happens. It's as indebted to the bored freedom ingrained in suburban life, as it is travelogues, tour diaries and mumble-core films. All in all, a pretty good student film, which happens to feature music from Julian Lynch, Liam the Younger and a host of other NJ/Underwater Peoples associated acts. Currently airing for One Week Only on Pitchfork.

video: Nothing Yet trailer (aka Frat Dad:The Movie?)
"Brosef"
Jesse Jarnow once wrote that "every generation needs its tripped out over-ambitious rock movie that doesn't make sense." Well, kids of 2k9/10/11, here's yours. (Maybe.) Directed by James Benson (Frat Dad) and Bernardo Britto, Nothing Yet follows the story of a young punk rock band from New Jersey who happens to play Frat Dad songs, however, the band IS NOT Frat Dad. Rather, dopplegangers. Fluffy Lumbers (and Frat Dad member) Sam Franklin stars in the film, alongside Frat Dad brother James Benson and Luka Usmiani, who never (to my knowledge) played in Frat Dad, though plays/has played in nearly every other conceivable 4th wave band from Bergen County. (Correction: Luka played in Frat Dad....once.) Nothing Yet, aka not Frat Dad: The Movie, features music from a host of Rock Ridge bands, including Liam the Younger, Julian Lynch and Real Estate. Look for the full-length comedic feature soon.

found: Brotherman
"The Pusher Who Became A Preacher"

The Numero Group table at the Pitchfork Music Festival's Record Fair was one of the sweetest, most financially devastating, booths I've ever browsed. Dozens of Numero reissue vinyls were to be had for cheap (We picked up Soul Messengers From Dimona, Don't Stop:Recording Tap, and Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal), but perhaps the biggest get was a pre-release cassette copy of Brotherman, the soundtrack to a movie that was never filmed. From the Numero site:
Final Solution- Theme from Brotherman
Final Solution- Never Coming Back Again

A Gospel Funk Hymnal), but perhaps the biggest get was a pre-release cassette copy of Brotherman, the soundtrack to a movie that was never filmed. From the Numero site:
In classic Numero fashion, before even one foot of film was shot, the plug was pulled and the movie was cancelled. Dragged around for 30 years by songwriter and arranger Wolfolk, the tapes of his life’s work have finally been mixed, and the soundtrack album has been augmented to include two orchestrated instrumentals intended for the film. Having no stills from the film to work with, the Numero Group tasked Minneapolis’ Burlesque of North America to paint a cover that could withstand the scrutiny of any blaxploitation poster geek. The Final Solution's soundtrack is '70s street soul at its finest; funky, grimey, ass rattling and smooth as butter. Of course, Numero Group says it best:
He was a pusher that became a preacher. A gangster pimp serving soup from the trunk of his Coup Deville. A mutant cross between Robin Hood and Friar Tuck. Everyman, our man on the street, Brotherman. Continuing a tradition that began with Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, and culminated with Shaft and Superfly, Brotherman was a blaxploitation film set to hit screens in 1975. Prior to the script being finished, the producers commissioned an original soundtrack to be performed by The Final Solution, a fledgling vocal group from Chicago’s west side.Brotherman sits in Tape 2 of our stereo, always accessible when doing dishes or trying to get your swerve on. If couch listening isn't enough, Koushik made a few of us very happy when he dropped "Theme from Brotherman" last night at APT.

post-420: Pineapple Express
"It's like God's Vagina"
Pineapple Express could end up being the best comedy of the year. Hell it might even become a staple in the vast ouevre of stoner comedies. "I can't even light this thing on my own". Seth Rogan, James Franco, a shit ton of "Pineapple Express," this movies got gold written all over it. Blast off.
