mp3: Velvet Davenport "Mystery Michael"

Warmy Girls

Psych pop classicists Velvet Davenport are making good on the promise of their early cassette releases, the stream-of-consciousness Lemon Drop Square Box and the equally ephemeral (and even more psychedelic) White Blue. No auditory hallucinations on "Mystery Michael", a selection from their forthcoming LP Warmy Girls, rather, more Quixotic explorations through the dazzling world of prophetic paisley pop. Compared to the stoned monotone often extolled on Lemon Drop Square Box, Parker Sprout sounds spritely on "Mystery Michael," proclaiming "I feel great about my day/ Wouldn't have spent it any other way." A warm affair from Sprout's psilo-pop extravaganza, whose Warmy Girls is set to slather the rest of 2010 in a distinctly lysergic cream. Highest recommendation.

new: Buffalo Moon "Low Tide Moon"

Black Magic

While their Moon Glyph debut was quite the entrance for Buffalo Moon, the MN psych-bossanova afficiando's forthcoming 7-inch finds them moving well beyond the constraints of summer themes and into the enchanted world of old Hollywood. "Low Tide Moon," the b-side, is an alluringly vivid portrait of nights spent on the Big Island (on a set somewhere in Burbank). It's amazing in that it recalls both Annette Funicello and Joe Meek, a credit to Elliot Kozel and Kyle Sobczak who recorded the tune on tape at Magic Fingers studio. "Low Tide Moon," which is a centerpiece on the Report V.2 compilation, is sitting high a-top my undeniable jams playlist right now, aka best songs of the year playlist, alongside "Round & Round" and Dent May's soon-to-be-released "Eastover Wives," which you can hear on Gorilla vs. Bear's July Mix. (It's a truly next level piece from Mr. May. Check the sax.)

Pre-order Buffalo Moon's Black Magic/Low Tide Moon 7-inch here. Highest rec'd. Do it quickly to, as their last tape sold out quicly. Buffalo Moon is about to head out on a trek throughout the Midwest & West, check tour dates here.

new: Velvet Davenport "When You Are Out"

Happy Ending

Velvet Davenport's latest offspring is now floating in the ether. Delivered care of Moon Glyph, the Minneapolis label spreading unparalled (and varied) psych from the land of 10K lakes, White Blue finds Parker Sprout once again channeling classic psych-pop and spinning it through a tunnel of bubbling lens filters. The effect is astonishing, especially on vignettes like "Checking Out," the tape's closer, which unravels from the shimmering "When You Are Out" and leaves you dangling, yearning for more White Blue. Luckily, VD's debut LP Warmy Girls isn't too far off in the distance.

Grip the new tape from Moon Glyph, and if your smart you'll snag the Regolith V.1 LP + Velvet Davenport's White Blue for a cool $20. Highest rec'd.

new: Velvet Davenport/ Moon Glyph comp

"It's Alright"

Purveyors of prosperous peace & luminous light, Minnesota's Moon Glyph have been on an extra terrestrial hot streak lately. From the bubbly "Beach Boy" dreams of Buffalo Moon to the lysergic jangle of Velvet Davenport, whose "Lemon Drop Square Box" cassette (one of my favorite releases of the year, so far) is aptly described by the label as "the story of someone opening a box of candy to find baby venus inside and then this fortunate soul must take care of the goddess," the label continues to cull the fruits of Minnesota's psych scene and this season's harvest is plentiful.

Straddling the same windowpane Syd Barrett and Olivia Tremor Control rode until spontaneously combusting into water molecules, Velvet Davenport are modern psychedelic shaman clued into the quixotic ways of inner-world. "I trip, it's aight, babe." Walking the fine line between blissed out paisley pop and raga-influenced DMT zoners, Velvet Davenport prove more than simply post-psych fetishists on their new shdwply records 7", which, if you haven't heard it yet, features both Gary War & Ariel Pink. Velvet Davenport teamed up with the pair again to record "Surfer Girl," which will be released on the forthcoming Regolith Vol. 1 comp on Moon Glyph.

Velvet Davenport will hit Kings County next week, where the band will play a Bobka show at Monster Island with Ducktails, Wild Nothing and Woodsman on Friday June 18th.
