liner notes: Bob Dylan's Planet Waves

"Forever Young"

From the liner notes of Bob Dylan's Planet Waves, featuring The Band:
"Back to the starting point! The kickoff, Hebrew letters on the work, Victor Hugo's house in Paris, NYC in early Autumn, leaves flying in the park, the clock strikes eight, Bong– I dropped a double brandy & tried to recall the events...beer halls & pin balls, polka bands, barbwire & thrashing clowns, objects, headwinds & snowstorms, family outings with strangers– Furious gals with garters & smeared lips on bar stools that stank from sweating pussy– doing the Hula– perfect priests in overhauls, glassy eyed, Insomnia! Space guys off duty with big ducks & ducktails all wired up & voting for Eisenhower, waving flags & jumping off fire engines, getting killed on motorcycles whatever– We sensed each other beneath the mask, pitched a tent in the street & joined the traveling circus, love at first sight! History became a lie! The sideshow took over– what a sight... the thresh-hold of the modern bomb, temples of the power, the cowboy saint, the Arapahoe, snapshots of– Apache poets searching thru the ruins for a glimpse of Buddha– I lit out for parts unknown, found Jacob's ladder up against an adobe wall & bought a serpent from a passing angel– Yeah the ole days are gone forever and the new ones ain't fair behind, the laughter is fading away, echoes of a star, of energy vampires in the gone world going WILD! Drinking the blood of innocent people, innocent lambs! The wretched of the Earth, my brothers of the flood, cities of the flesh– Milwaukee, Ann Arbor, Chicago, Bismarck, South Dakota, Duluth! Duluth– where Baudelaire lived & Goya cashed in his chips, where Joshua brought the house down! From there it was straight up- a little jolt of Mexico and some good luck, a little power over the Grave, some more brandy & the teeth of a lion & a compass"

mp3: White Antelope "It Ain't Me Babe"

"You Say Your Looking For Someone"
He's done it again, this time covering Bob Dylan's classic "It Ain't Me Babe." As expected, absolutely majestic, most notably the doubled vocals, which give it a sort of campfire deep inside a cave sing-a-long vibe. Apparently this was on the White Antelope MySpace page, although it seems to have been removed. Oh well, you can snag an mp3 below. Thanks to Peenko for the heads up.

covers: Marissa Nadler

"Dragon Clouds So High Above"

Marissa Nadler just posted a cover of one of my all-time favorite Zimmerman tracks on her blog. Just another lo-fi home recording to keep you from getting restless while waiting for Little Hells to arrive. She's also serving up some new demo's and a Roy Orbison cover as well. I recommend subscribing (via RSS) to her blog, as she's been very good about updating it with fresh goods.

nu musick: Cat Power

I love me some Cat Power. With that said, I couldn't be more excited about her upcoming release of covers, a follow up of sorts to 2000's The Covers Record. This time Chan's calling it Jukebox and her jukebox consists of her covers of Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, James Brown and Janis Joplin. Your gonna want to buy this one on January 22nd as the official release comes with a limited edition bonus disc that has Chan covering Cash Money's Hot Boys and Nick Cave. Thanks to the Matador Blog we have a lil taste of the recording sessions. Pre-order the deluxe edition with the Lil Wayne cover from Insound (here).

Re: I'm Not There Soundtrack

"Your Debutante Just Knows What You Need/But I Know What You Want"

Been waiting for this since the tracklisting was announced a few months back and it was definitely worth the wait. This tuesday October 30th, aka Mischief Night, the re-dick-u-lus I'm Not There soundtrack will be available for purchase from the fine folks at Sony. On MySpace (HERE) they're streaming Sufjan Steven's "Ring Them Bells", Jim James & Calexico's "Going to Acapulco" (highly rec'd), Cat Power's "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" and Jeff Tweedy's majestic "Simple Twist of Fate." No doubt this soundtrack is probably going to be one of the best compilations released this year. Below are a few more reasons, Eddie Vedder's bad ass foot stomping "All Along The Watchtower" and Stephen Malkmus' rendition of "Ballad of a Thin Man." This tuesday kids, this tuesday.

under the covers: Cat Power

"Honey Let Me Be Your Salty Dog"

Indie-folk chanteuse Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, just announced a release date for her highly anticipated follow up to 2000's Covers. The record, coincidentally titled Covers II will see the light of day on January 22nd, 2008 by way of her longtime label Matador. Not only does Chan have one of the most enchanting voices I've ever heard, she is one of the most beautiful women I've ever laid eyes on (Chanel kingpin Karl Lagerfeld thinks so too, he featured her in Chanels Spring runway show). In the spirit of giving I hereby share two of my favorite Cat Power covers, the hauntingly beautiful, albeit abridged, version of the Velvet Underground's "I Found A Reason," and Chan's version of the traditional tune "Salty Dog." She's also on the I'm Not There Soundtrack doing one of my favorite Dylan songs "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again" (Chan has covered the Bard before. "Kingsport Town" appears on Covers and "Knocking on Heavens Door" on Speaking for Trees). Catch the lovely Ms. Marshall in the 'sick' video for "Lived in Bars" below.

I'm Not There Soundtrack

Details about the soundtrack to the forthcoming, Dylan-approved bio pic, I'm Not There (you know, the one starring 7 different Dylans, one being Cate Blanchett), were released yesterday and my only reaction is "Holy Shit." The soundtrack reads as a whose who of indie rock covering the Bard himself. I hate to take it at face value but this could end up being one of the greatest film soundtracks ever. It sure looks that way on paper. Jeff Tweedy covers "Simple Twist of Fate" ('Nuff Said). Hearing Jim James high lonesome voice on The Basement Tape gem "Goin' to Acapulco" is also sure to be a highlight.Tracklist for the 2-disc set below, as well as a choice Cat Power cover of "Knocking on Heavens Door" and Tweedy playing "John Wesley Harding." The Cat Power recording is from the "Speaking for Trees" DVD, which features Chan Marshall "performing solo outdoors in the countryside amidst the ambient sounds of nature." Also catch a sneak peak into a scene where Cate Blanchett's Dylan meets David Cross' Ginsberg. Big moment.

Collabo's: Dylan

"Guess Things Happen That Way"

We love us some colla-bo's. M.I.A & Timbo, Jerry & Grisman, or Miles & 'Trane, it's all good. No doubt Robert Zimmerman feels the same way. This week we highlight some friendly, very loose collaborations from the late 60's/early 70's, when the Bard could do no wrong.

The Dylan & Cash Sessions have been widely bootlegged since they were laid down in CBS Studio's in Nashville in spring of '69. The vibe is super loose and many of the tracks are first takes, giving them a sincere, raw quality that only adds to the magikal ambiance of their collaboration. We all know the classik version of "Girl from the North Country" on Nashville Skyline, but be sure to check out ultra sweet versions of "Guess Things Happen That Way," "I Walk the Line" and "You Are My Sunshine."

About a year after his studio sessions with Cash in Nashville, Dylan found himself in New York's Columbia Studios with legendary Beatle, George Harrison. Unlike the Cash sessions, Harrison sits in the backseat, acting as a sideman, occassionally providing backing vocals. Checkout the undisputed highlights of the session, a jangly juke house ramblin' version of "Matchbox" and a tape hissing lo-fi, electric-country-blues cover of "Yesterday." This may be Bobby D butchering the Beatles, but it's still pretty sweet.
