Post-SXSW Festival in Monterrey Mexico?

"ToddPNYC"

Yesterday some interesting pictures of an abandoned drive-in movie theater turned up on Facebook. BK DIY scene leader Todd P posted them. Later I came to learn that the pictures are of the potential grounds for a post-SXSW festival in the Mexican city of Monterrey, roughly four hours south of Austin. Rumor has it 200 bands (Correction: more like 40-80 bands) will be playing the three day festival, which will reportedly kick off the Saturday March 20th, and will overlap with SXSW for a couple days. If the lineup is anything like Todd's SXSW shows of the past, his legendary beach BBQs, or CMJ shows under the Bridge, 80 bands over three days is probably an accurate, maybe even conservative, take on the amount of music that could be blasted from the base of the Sierra Madre's one late weekend in March. Fingers crossed. See ya in Mexico.

Monterrey is actually about 6.5 hours away from Austin. I live in between both cities (San Antonio).

depends how fast you drive, and how long the border tales you

Monterrey ain't Williamsburg, kiddos. I'd think twice about making a road trip out of it.

anonymous is right that Monterrey is not Williamsburg...

in fact Monterrey is far safer and cleaner than New York City. Vastly lower crime rates, a lower violent crime rate...

anonymous fear monger's got no idea.

Monterrey is a safe big city. Don't frighten people with your cliche yankee Mexico ignorance.

So typical for US loudmouths to see Mexico as some dusty wild West no man's land. In reality, it's a modern forward thinking place. Sensational US news reports about drug wars are a bigger issue than the actual drug violence. Tourists and bystanders are far safer on the Mexican side of the border than on the US side.

I don't know about that 12/17 1:45, but if you are smart, you just won't end up in the bad areas. Probably not too far from this venue actually. Will people be able to camp out there?

Monterrey is a good chunk better than 4 hours. I've made the drive several times and never done better than 7+, and that was sans traffic.

The drive is plenty safe and so is Monterrey.

I live in Monterrey. It’s approximately a 6 or 7 hour drive from Austin. The city is relatively safe for tourists, as long as you don’t go downtown too late at night.
There's a lot of talk of how the festival is going to be really good, the people in charge of bringing the local bands are gathering up some great prospects. Here’s an article with more info: http://www.imposemagazine.com/bytes/todd-p-monterrey-festival
