mp3: Twerps "Self Assured"

Black Eyes

Over a year ago I posted a few stunningly melancholic pop tracks from Australia's Twerps. A year later and the group is in the US playing shows. Nice to see these things come together. Anyway, they've got a few 7-inches on the forefront– one on Underwater Peoples, one on OESB, and another on Group Tightener. All of this seems fitting, as last year I remember getting all "I'm obsessed with this. You too?!?!" with all those guys. Something to be said for camaraderie. Anyway, the Twerps are playing their first NYC area show tonight at Glasslands with Family Portrait (Wet Dream lineup), La Big Vic and Chapter Music head Guy Blackman. Peep "Self Assured", which originally appeared on The Report V.II comp and is now featured, in mastered glory, on the UP 7-inch. Word.

video: The Twerps "Another One"

"That Didn't Come"

Riding the high seas of apathy and general youthful neglect, the Twerps make your miserable moments seem a lot less pathetic. The evening walk to the corner store to get a beer and some bread becomes an adventure, as, well, you haven't left your home in days. You've just been sitting their starring at the wall, waiting for someone to call, or some unidentified package, a postcard from an old friend, or a new phone book. Petty shit that we all obsess over cause we have nothing better to do. Somehow the Twerps make it all sound so fresh. Maybe its the backwards spinning toilet water, but probably something else. I'm guessing its something else, especially considering they just opened for Yo La Tengo in Melbourne.

mp3: The Twerps "Another One That Didn't Come"

"If It Wasn't For All The Gin"
Introduced via the Northern Autumn/Southern Spring #3 by the Rose Quartz folks, The Twerps have been in pretty consistent rotation over here. Highly melodic, addictive slow pop tunes with attitude, like smart young kids who really like Comet Gain but have more sex, and are from Australia (or maybe have more sex 'cause their from Australia?). Their recent release on Night People is full of undeniable headphone friends, like "Dance Alone" and its predecessor "Another One That Didn't Come." Meloncholic pop nuggets flooded with apathy and suburban melodrama. "Good Advice" kicks off the C30 and sets the tone, head in one hand, beer in the other. The most earnest sad kid jingle-jangles I've heard in a good while.
