mix: Maurice Fulton - Futureboogie

"Straight From The Heart"
Maurice Fulton has been producing super-funky, futuristic retro disco from outer space since the mid 90s, and this mix he put together for the Futureboogie booking agency is one of the best we've heard in the genre, right up there with Morgan Geist's Unclassics and Murphy and Mahoney's masterpiece, Fabriclive.36. So if you are into of either of those two albums, then do yourself a favor and give Maurice a spin. Above all else, this mix is a lesson in pacing; it has a laid back yet energetic vibe throughout, and subtly uses tension and release to give it that extra boost. Of course, it also features some incredible, obscure disco cuts, but that kind of goes without saying. Download below.

gifts: DFA Radio Mixes

"Does Acid Make Me Gay?"

It's no secret that we love the DFA. From the balls-to-the-wall production, to the hypnotic remixes, the DJ sets and all the wonderful artists they've introduced us to over the years (Rapture, Hot Chip, Still Going), it's safe to say that these guys know what's up.

So it should be no surprise that tomorrow night 2/3 of the Bobka crew will make the trip to middle of nowhere Brooklyn for the annual DFA holiday party at Studio B. The last time the DFA threw a party at Studio B was on Halloween. Unfortunately, we were still hurtin' from Dan Deacon's madness the night before. But when the DFA Radio Mix Series posted Tim & Tim's DJ set from Halloween, we vowed never to miss another DFA party. Fortunatly for us, the cats over at the DFA are very generous and they love sharing their lengthy, head spinnin' mixes. They do this by way of the DFA Radio Mix Series which has been consistently sharing mixes from the DFA crew since 2005. If you're ever feeling a bit sick of dancing to "Murder on the Dancefloor" in the mirror, then check out the link below and download some of the DFA goodness. We really like the Murphy sets from Winter 2005, but everything is money.

CMJ recap: Celebration

"Hands Off My Gold"

Wednesday afternoon was when it started to get hectic. After spending Tuesday evening at the Bowery Ballroom with Bon Iver, The Shaky Hands (more about them later) and The Rosebuds (among others), we hit up Hiro latenight for a ridiculous set of obscure disco by James Murphy.
Sore from shooting lasers and head banging, we spent our wednesday afternoon bar hopping on the lower east side, popping in and out of showcases. One of the best shows we happened to catch was from B-More psych-art rockers Celebration. With an ever changing schdule dominating the Brooklyn Vegan showcase at Piano's, we were lucky to stick around for Annie Mac's DJ set and catch the melodic noise of Celebration's set of blowing Baritone's, super reverberated organs and at times 4 different percussionists, all while Katrina Ford wailed, and I mean wailed, on the mic. Still haven't heard Modern Tribe yet, released 2 weeks ago on 4AD, but I highly recommend checking them out live. This Simian Mobile Disco remix of the band's "Hands Off My Gold" might not be exactly what Celebration's about but it's a damn good intro to a band we are to sure hear alot about over the coming years. For fans of the YYY's and TVOTR.

Death to Ringtone Rap

"Undercover/Fuck ya Mother"

Last night Mort and I decided that we hate Soulja Boy. Yep, "Crank Dat Soulja Boy" has gotta be one of the worst rap songs ever. And while you may like to get down to the over-and-done with minimalist beat (perhaps you even know the dance), truth be told the guy just can't rhyme. Maybe it's because he's 17. The above is what a real rapper looks like at 17. Death to ringtone rap.

"Get Up/Get Out"

CMJ starts today and we'll be at the Brooklyn Vegan showcase at the Bowery Ballroom tonight. Really looking forward to seeing The Rosebuds, Miracle Fortress and Bon Iver. For those without tickets, don't worry, late night with Annie Mac and DFA king bee James Murphy at the Hiro Ballroom for FREE!

CMJ: The Schedule: Day One

Hot Damn!

October 16th is just around the corner and after weeks of random shows popping up here and there, and conflicting times and dates taking up every sticky on my desktop, CMJ has finally released the official schedule. Over the next couple of days we will go into details about each day, highlighting acts that we can't wait to see and others we think you might dig. Peep some of our favorites that are playing the 16th below.

Complete CMJ Schedule for 10/16

Bowery Ballroom
Brooklyn Vegan Showcase
6:00pm Bon Iver
8:00pm Miracle Fortress
9:00pm The Most Serene Republic
10:00pm Dean & Britta
11:00pm The Rosebuds

We've got tix to this one and couldn't be happier spending our first night of CMJ with the dreamy haze-scapes of Miracle Fortress and the groovy dance rock of the Rosebuds. Late night we plan on catching James Murphy's DJ set at Hiro (not CMJ). Very, very excited.

Day Stage- Puck Building
12:00pm 1090 Club
1:00pm Takka Takka
2:00pm The Section Quartet
3:00pm Saturday Looks Good to Me
3:00pm Jennifer O'Connor

Jennife O'Connor's Over the Mountain, Across the Valley and Back to the Stars was one of my favorite records of '06. Her potent folkie blues could be categorized as something between Cat Power and Liz Phair. Yeah, she's bad ass. No wonder Matador signed her. She also plays that night at The Living Room. I've also heard alot of good things about Takka Takka and Saturday Looks Good To Me. Could be a lovely afternoon.

Pianos
7:00pm The Unsacred Hearts
7:45pm LOOKER
8:30pm The Two Man Gentlemen Band
9:00pm Benji Cossa
9:45pm Rocketship Park
10:30pm The Octagon
11:15pm Sam Champion

Gotta love Sam Champion, and not just because they're named after everyone's favorite NYC meteorologist. They've got that jangly, early REM/Pavement groove down pat and they rock. Not to they have a Bobka favorite in their ranks, drummer Ryan Thornton of RANA. We like RANA, alot.

Sam Champion- Like A Secret
Jennifer O'Connor- Exeter, Rhode Island
The Rosebuds- Blue Bird

done did it again: James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem)

When it comes to obscure tech-y disco theres only one man for the job; James Murphy. The Murph, one of Jersey's finest, has made it safe for rock kids to twist and shake for years as a DJ and more recently with his ass-kicking LCD Soundsystem. Hell, he introduced Daft Punk to the rock kids. He did it at CBGB's. And everybody thought it was crazy. With that in mind it's no surprise that famed London nightclub Fabric asked the Head of DFA to dig into his massive crates for the 36th installment of their Fabriclive series. If you've been following Murphy and LCD Soundsystem you know that the guy loves four on the floor beats and a shit ton of cowbell, then you are well prepared for Murphy and partner Pat Mahoney's livemix for Fabric, which culls from obscure disco hits, synth funk and a couple new DFA joints (Still Going's "Still Going Theme" & LCD's terrifically titled "Hippie Priest Bum-Out"). As with his DFA work, this shits all about funky beats and oscillating rhythms. If you recognize anything on this mix consider yourself a disco-genius. If you're a fan of LCD's 45:33 or either of the DFA remix compilations (and I know you are), be sure to snag a copy of Fabric.Live 36 when it drops on October 10th. Peep two of my favorite tracks below.

DFA: Still Going Theme

"Piano House Revival"

DFA Records has secured the exclusive license to the soon-to-be-anthemic single from NYC electronic duo Still Going. While the 12" doesn't officially hit the streets until September 25, the title track, Still Going Theme, has been enjoying some healthy buzz ever since James Murphy spun it at last years DFA Holiday party. Since then it was featured on Lindstrom & Prins Thomas' acclaimed Essential Mix, and will be included on LCD Soundsystem's much-anticipated FABRICLIVE 36 mix.

The piano propelled track is an instant crowd pleaser and according to Fact Magazine will "make even the darkest, grimiest nightclub feel like the sun-splashed pool party of your dreams" and convince the listener that "life is fundamentally good." Decide for yourself by listening here, and purchase a full, digital copy here.
