nu musick: Diskjokke

More great electronic music from Scandinavia

We first heard Oslo, Norway-based producer Diskjokke featured on the fantastic (and criminally underrated) Sunkissed mix last year, but it wasn't until recently that we were re-introduced to his novel take on the space disco sound. Using the laid-back, bongo-infused vibe of space disco as his template, Disjokke works in elements of German tech-house and French electro to give his music a unique sound and appeal.

Essentially, he has taken my three favorite sub-genres of electronic music and seamlessly blended them together to create some awesome tunes that sound equally as great on a pair of headphones as they do blasting from large stereo speakers. Fans of Lindstrom, Kompakt, and Ed Banger will all find something to like in Diskjokke's music.

bangers & mash: Mr. Oizo

"You're invited into my house"

Mr. Oizo has added the magic Ed Banger touch to yet another track, giving Calvin Harris' "Merrymaking At My Place" an extreme makeover worthy of Oprah. Thankfully Oizo doesn't go too overboard with the signature Ed Banger glitch on this remix, instead choosing to emphasize the funkiness of the bassline by adding some warm synths, a skitter-skatter hi hat pattern, and powerful 8bit snare. Apparently all of the kids in the UK are going bonkers over it. Check it out below, and buy it HERE.

And to be honest, the real reason I wrote about Oizo's remix is so I could have an acceptable segue into one of my favorite videos of all time: the Oizo-produced-and-directed "Flat Beat", featuring everyone's favorite headbanging (Ed Bangin'?) puppet, Flat Eric.

Daft Punk in Brooklyn

"Robot Rock"

We were lucky enough to attend the sold out Daft Punk show at Coney Island last Thursday and are still in absolute awe thinking about what transpired: it wasn't so much a performance as it was an electronic spectacle; It wasn't merely live music with a solid light show - it was an all-out, balls-to-the-wall audio/visual extravaganza.

The set consisted of the French duo's greatest hits mixed and mashed with one another to create something fresh and original. But what really dropped the collective jaw of the audience were the lights: they were synced up perfectly to the music, and not a single sequence was repeated throughout the show. The amount of programming that must have gone into creating the display is mind-boggling, but the end result is well worth the effort. Check out some quality amateur video below (courtesy of 'bluebrow'), and keep your eyes peeled for news of an official release sometime in the future.

DOUBLE UPDATE: So there will be NO official DVD (boo!) but Daft Punk is releasing a mastered audio recording of their June 14 tour stop in Paris. The lead single will be "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and will feature video footage from the Brooklyn gig. Look for the disc in November, and peep Billboard for more details. Also, be sure to check out P4K for an impressive glimpse inside the pyramid.

This Girl Called Uffie

"Is It Hip-Hop, Is It Electro, Damn Is She Coming from Hell?"

Uffie has been bringing her nu-skool spoken word electro rap to the masses since hooking up with Ed Banger maestro Feadz in 2005 ("Pop the Glock"). Recently, she lent her off kilter rhyme-less rapping to the Justice jump-off "Tthhee Ppaarrttyy" (which is how every summer playlist should start).

Known for her rambunctious, often vulgar, lyrics ("If you just called me a cunt in some other word like __, But after this you'll be the one sucking a whole lot of dicks"), Uffie switches lanes on "First Love," a bouncy bubblegum electro-pop-hop anthem. The surprisingly lovey-dovey I-Miss-You but Fuck Off track could really become a staple on teenage mixtapes in the years to come. It's one of the most saccharine soaked songs I've heard this year, and a huge step forward for the potty mouthed US-via-France rap-tress. She's already dropped a bunch of singles and remixes, but we can't wait for her album, due on Ed Banger sometime in 2007. Uffie's got it.
